State . .Forester George Spaur announced Satur day. "Out of some 250 active timber sales we have had only 19 tres passes during the past two years," Spaur said. Most of these, Spaus averred, affected only small vol umes of , timber with several of the trespasses involving only six or eight scattered trees. More than 99 per cent of the operators, Spaur said, are respon sible and have leaned over back ward in cooperating in forest fire protection and forest conservation act compliances. Price Spiral Blamed v Spaur blamed the "fantastic" spiral of stumpage prices as re sponsible for the ( trespass cases occurring on state forest lands. He said no losses of county or state revenue resulted, as trespass cas es were settled by a payment of double stumpage penalties by the operator. Spaur added, however, that the high stumpage prices in creased the local counties' receipts from the sale of the salvage tim ber of state forest lands. He also stressed the importance of clean ing up the burned and cut- over state forests which is now possible with higher prices and increased utilization of heretofore discarded parts of the tree. : The forester said the. forestry headquarters at . Forest Grove handles all timber sales in the northwest area, including the Til lamook bum, while the remainder of the 657,000 acres of forest lands are administered from the Salem office. A total of 11 timber sale foresters, not including the field inspectors and wardens who also check on state forest lands, have been assigned to this work. Next Auction at Salem Spaur reported that the next large timber salelay the state would be by oral auction at Salem on September 11, covering 31,000, 000 board feet of timber located in eastern Marion county. The timber has been broken down to species with minimum prices as follows: 21,500,000 Yellow Fir at $20 per thousand board feet, 8,400,000 Hemlock at $3 per 1000 board feet, 100,000 Noble Fir at $8 per 1000 board feet, 200,000 White Pine, at $8 per 1000 board feet and 100,000 Red Cedar at $3 per 1000 board feet The department also announced it would hold an oral auction Aug ust 18 at Veneta to'seU 2,883,000 feet of timber in Lane county.
