Congress Gets To Work on Tax Measure WASHINGTON, July 20 -UP- Congress got to work today on a multi-billion dollar tax increase to pay for perparedness. Without waiting for President Truman's tax message, the con gressional staff of tax experts be gan studying sources of new reve nue. Their orders came from Chair man Doughton (D-NC) of the house ways and means committee which writes the tax bills. , Mr. Truman told congress yes terday he wiifl ask for new taxes- how much he didn't say to help finance the extra $10,000,000,000 he deemed necessary to build de fenses against communist aggres sion. He said new taxes would curb inflation and profiteers. His message asking the levies may go to congress next week. There was increasing talk of a stiff excess profits tax. Such a levy diverts to the federal trea sury corporation profits above cer tain limits. Doughton gave this tax picture: 1. He virtually ruled out any propect that tax boosts on cor porations or individuals will be come effective before next Jan uary 1. 2. He said an excess profits tax on corporations "is worth of seri ous consideration." 3. He guessed that the time table on a tax-boosting bttl will call for action probably in Novem ber or December, or possibly early next year. : LEVI IN RACE SPOKANE, July 20 -F Levi (Chief) McCormack, who spent many a season in left field for Spokane in the Western Interna tional baseball league, stepped in to a new field today politics. Public Welfare Bill Approved In Washington OLYMPIA, July 20 The major item before the special ses sion of the legislature an appro priation of $16,710,000 for public assistance was pushed through the house 94 to 4 tonight The bill now goes to the gover nor for his signature, thus taking care of the major problem for which he convened the extraordin ary meeting of lawmakers. Its passage cleared the way for an early end to the special session.
