Elevator Men s Strike Talks 'Progressing' NEW YORK, April 29JPf Progress was reported tonight lii mediation efforts to settle Man hattan's strike of 12,000 apartment house employes. The strike has left many .sky scraper dwellers without elevator service. . "I am encouraged at the prog ress that has been made this afternoon, said Arthur S. During Saturday's two - hour market, fresh demand appeared for automobile, aircraft and radio television stocks-groups which have been in demand for ,a good part of tha week. News affecting the market was Impressively good so good that some people wondered why tha market did not make more pro- tress than It did. Labor problems la several Industries were regard ad as causa for concern but the problems have not yet broken out Into strikes and there appeared to he a good chance that strikes would be avoided. A total of 950 Individual Issues hanged hands today, of which 822 advanced and 198 declined. Sales of 1,180,000 shares compared with 1,250,000 a week ago. Grain Futures, Soybeans Up Price Ladder CHICAGO, April 29-(ff)-Soy-bean and grain futures moved up ward sharply today. Wheat closed 1 to IV cents higher, corn up H to IV. oats ahead 1 to rye up to I. soybeans Vt to higher, and lard up T to 20 cents a hundred pounds. The fact that yesterday's rain' fal in tha southwest didn't come where it was needed most lent strength to wheat futures. Rains were heaviest in eastern and cen tral Kansas.
