Norbert Matteucci, - OSB, formerly assistant pastor i of St. Mary's Catholic church' here, died Tuesday at the Mercy hospital in San Diego, Calif ., following a long Illness. i - He was born in Marlia, Italy, gov. 6, 1893, and came to Milwau ie. Ore., as a youth. He made his religious profession at the Mt. Angel abbey Sept 8, 1920, and was ordained to priesthood June 0; 1925. i ; - j i He celebrated his first mass at St Michael's church in Portland and then served as assistant pas tor In Mt. Angel. He was pastor of until 1943 when he became ill. He served as chaplain at tne Mercy hospital until he became Incapaci tated six months ago. ' Requiem mass will be said Mon day at 10 a.m. in St Mary's Cath olic church In Mt Angel. HULSEY Construction of a new reservoir for the Salem Heights water district is under way, and is expected to be com pleted in time to relieve the sum mer water shortage. The 150,000 - gallon reservoir is expected to be finished by June 1. It will increase the district's water capacity four times. Consolidated Builders Inc., gave $150 to climax the drive. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Stewart and children who were injured last week in an auto accident near Oregon City have all recovered with the exception of Stewart who is under a doctor's care for a back injury. Their car which was hit by a truck was completely demol ished. The Mill City PTA met at the school house Thursday j i night, April 13, for their monthly meet ing. Mrs. Robert Venness presided at the business session. A record player purchased by the PTA was presented to the high schooL Election of officers was in order with Mrs. Kenneth Crosier elected president; Donald Bengstone,: first vice president; Frederic Pugh, sec ond vice president; Hope Baney, secretary, and Mrs. Charles Har mon, treasurer. SILVERTON An application by Cory Gould Granger to oper ate a taxi service in the Silverton area will be heard by the state public utilities commission in the Salem city hall Tuesday, April 25, at 10 a. m. HOME "Turn Your Steps To Home, Sweet Home," is the slogan chosen by the com mjttee in charge of the home coming program for the Sweet Home Union high school on Sun day, April 23, at 2 p.m. when many former student graduates and teachers are expected to be pres ent. It's nearly 40 years since the Sweet Home high school opened its doors to students living in Un ion high school district 2. Jacob Stacker was the first principal and the school was started in the old Christian church building at the corner of Oak and Long streets. Started In 1912 The first high school building was started in the fall of 1912. John States, local contractor and builder took the contract for $4,000. He had finished the two upper rooms in time for the fall term of school in 1913. It was in 1924 that the heed was felt for a sizable gymnasium. W. H. Bowser took the contract of building it. It cost $12,000. Many changes have taken place since Jacob Stoker headed Sweet Home high school and first gradu ates were handed their diplomas The graduating class had but three members, Roy Wood, Everett Mc Clun and Opal Russell. The old school building is gone. and bo is the gym. In their day it was a wonderful school setup cost ing.. around- $22,000.. Today, the Sweet Home high school can take pride in the fact that it has one oi the finest set of buildings in the state, costing a million dollars Two recently constructed units, an auditorium costing more than $76, 000 and a gym and class rooms costing $226,000 add greatly to the value of the property. Dedication Sunday It is to dedicate these new units that a program has been arranged for; Sunday afternoon. The pro gram is In the hands oz a com mittee of graduates of the school. It is the desire of the committee, present school authorities and the community in general to welcome alll former teachers and .students to this homecoming and reunion, Registration will begin at 10 o'clock a.m. and the plant will be open for inspection all day. To Consolidate WithWiUamina WILLAMINA School district No. 8, or Fern district, voted 21 to 10 to consolidate with the Willa- mina district this week. The Buck Hollow school district 37 voted 17 to 0 to join the Willamina district. which voted 13 to 0 to accept the two. Sixteen full time teachers have notified grade school principal Kenneth Ramey that they intend to return for the 1950-51 school year. Three teachers, H. O. Kravig, seventh grade; Frances Lawson. first grade; and Gayette Bamett, first grade, will not return. Mrs. Rose Riggle of the Fern district school, and Mrs. H. A. Ault trom the Buck Hollow school, which have consolidated with the local grade school, will teach here next year. Gilbert Smith, Grand Ronde, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad, Grand Ronde, and William McKinley of Sheridan were severely injured when Mr. Smith's car was demolished in an accident early Sunday morning. Mr. Smith suf fered a broken back, and Mr. and Mrs. Conrad were both severely lacerated.
