Competition Cuts Costs of Home The Statesman. Salem, Dragon. Sunday, March 19, 19503 Workmanship, New Methods Help Market " A great deal of "water" has been squeezed from building costs, and on the basis of comparative present-day prices a builder gets his money's worth along with the benefits of many new develop ments. , That was the consensus of opin ion as given recently in a survey of architects, builders, material dealers and all branches of the building trades. More expert workmanship, real competition for sales and service, modern methods these were among the attributes mentioned by valley men who commented on the upsurge of building which sta tistics now indicate has become nauon-wiae. , ' -. TlrviA nisi facViSnnsrl mr tition in many lines, and the end to a scarcity of many items, has made the building market right fully attractive to persons who are willing to compare prices in other lines of endeavor and realize that building by no means it out of line even if a house canot be built as cheaply as in pre-war days; it still can be a better house, and Just as much in tempo with income as was its counterpart of 10 years . ago," one Salem builder declared. Another said he anticipated 1950 would be a "really boom year in building" ana predicted we de mand for homes would keep well ahead of the supply for a consid erable period of time. "There are thousands of trailer houses not used as trailers at all," he said. They are homes. And while they were all - important at the time, most people are not go ing to want to live in tnem year in and year out when a good home Is available at a reasonable price and a fair rate of amortization. And the doubling - up of families Is still more wide - spread than should be necessitated on any thing like a permanent basis." WATCH THOSE LEAKS Those roof leaks can be costly and sometimes temporary repairs are not enough. If a new roof will prevent water from seeping down through walls and ruining plaster, wallpaper and decorations, it is worth the cost. In any event, leaks should not be ignored or given the "bucket treatment" perma nently. t . . . .. - - t . ! f - i y - ? i . - 1 Corner windows with loavres for ventilation, an Interesting block design at the entrance and n the garare door makes this new house stand oat at 1995 W.
