.1 I 1? t r THi BIUISJBU1U1L DaiSTA, CJieyuiL rwy Mechanical Hop Picker Takes Employment 4iray from Indians in Washington Valley Br James nutcheson AP Newsfeaturee YAKIMA, Wash. The white man's machine age has driven the Indian from another of his Stamping grounds. Mechanical hop picking ma chines have taken -over in this fertile irrigated valley where 40 of the nation's hops are grown. Thousands of Indians pitched their teepees in the hop fields each fall in the pre-machine era. Average annual employment was 80,000. Clean Job Done Hop authorities say close to 60,000 workers would be needed to harvest the increased acreage of today and match the clean job "of the machines. The estimated hop harvest employment in the valley during the 1949 season was down to about 6,000. An estimat ed 2 per cent of the region's 13,000 acres of hops is all that was hand-picked this year. The valley now has 150 or more portable harvesters and about so or more of the higher producing stationary machines. The port ables run through the field, be tween rows, gobbling up the vines and sprewing out the stems and leaves. Crop Estimated Estimates of the 1949 Yakima valley hop crop run from 90,000 bales by Marlowe Lesh, president of the Washington State Hop Pro ducers association, to 105,000 in the U.S. government crop report. Estimates of the value to growers run up to $11,000,000. It's a big money harvest, but it isn't the colorful event it was when Indians brought a festival spirit to it. Harvest time brought extra spending money to the Indians, but the Yakima tribes men still have their main source of income the fertile reservation acreages that they lease to or chardists and farmers.
