Oct 20-0?VMy- or Dorothy McCuUough Lee pro posed today that -a parole clficer. independent or municipal judges. be assigned to municipal court cases. She introduced an ordinance which would make the city coun cil responsible for reviewing or reversing decisions of the parole officer. The ordinance would also require full court records. The municipal judges expressed disapproval of the ordinance. They said that divorcing the parole of ficer from them would hamper their work. Bliss Rader stressed the import' ance of discarding outmoded equipment and methods and pre dicted that schools of the future would seem almost fantastic when compared with those of today. The first PTA gathering attract ed a large turnout of parents. Mu sic was furnished by Mrs. Wayne Meusey, who presented vocal and piano numbers and refreshments were served by the 5th and 6th grade mothers. Diphtheria Case Fatal MEDFORD, Oct 20 -JP- A 12 year-old boy died of diphtheria here last night bringing to three the number of fatalities from that disease here. An encouraging note arose ; however, with the report that no new cases nave turned up. By now, virtually every school child in the county has been inoculated against the disease. ' ' Stock Market Finishes on Losing Side NEW YORK, Oct HVTh stock market ran Into tax troubles today and finished on the losinf side. losses were small for the most part and a substantial number of issues crept a little higher. In early dealings the market showed signs of getting ahead. In mid-morning, though. Presi dent Truman, speaking at a press conference, , indicated he would be forced to ask congress for high er taxes when the legislators re convene in January. Demand flagged immediately. For most of the balance of the session quotations were persist ently shaded. Turnover was most active when rallying signs were in evidence. Business for the day, swollen by numerous big blocks which sold in the morning, con tracted to 1,270,000 shares from 1,370,000 Wednesday. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks dipped J2 of one point to 67.1. Official Dims Bridge Hopes PENDLETON. Oct. 20 -UP)- A diacouracing note for the inter ests who want a bridge across the Columbia river at Umatilla was sounded here today. Charles H. Reynolds. LaGrande. who talked with the federal bu reau of public roads chief about it, said the latter did not approve the bridge. He felt it would use federal money needed more urg ently elsewhere.
