Bosox Called 'Miracle Men' Fans Liken Present Club to '14 Braves BOSTON, Sept 27 -iJP)- Cries f "miracle men hailin the Red Sox drive to the top of the Amer ican league today sounded like an echo to Boston fans an echo 33 years away. That's what they called George Stalling! Braves of 1914 when the canoe from last place 10 games back on July 4 to win the National league pennant. And that's what they are calling Manager Joe McCarthy's Red Sox even though they have yet to! clinch the flag. McCarthy's men were 12 games off the pace on the "Fourth" the traditional date when baseball fans usually take stock and count the chips. As long as the Sox kept above the .500 mark in wins and losses McCarthy kept up his optimism. "Shucks he told a sports writ er back In mid-summer, "what does dropping to sixth place mean at this stage of the race or even seventh and eighth? It doesn't mean a thing, but what does mean something is the .500 mark." "Never," reminded Joe, "go be low the .500 mark." The Red Sox did drop below the .500 mark in June but only for a few games. That's the gauge McCarthy used and he told newsmen at the time of the all-star game in July that the Red Sox were ready. At any rate, Boston fans have the world series fever, Lven though th hub has had pennant winners in two of the last three years Red Sox in 1946, Braves In 1948 the fever is as bad as ever.
