Scores of brokers and their clients decided they could not take another soggy hot day and left the financial district early for a long week end. The day's total turnover of 640,000 shares was one of the smallest of the month. At one time wheat was ahead 2 cents, but this was reduced at the close. Firmer prices for cash wheat in the southwest helped that cereal. Wheat ended H-lVa higher. corn was Vi-IH higher, oats rere to 1 cent lower, rye was i-l 'i higher, soybeans were 2Vi to 4 cents lower and lard was 8 to 17 cents a hundred pounds higher. Aside from the prospect of in creased CCC buying, there was no particular news to account for the wheat firmness.
