10 The Statesman, Salem. Oregon. TbnrtdaY. July . 1949 World Leaders in Parley at Aspen, Colo. Music Festival And Conclave Honor Goethe i By Eric Bfriman ASPEN. tc)o, July 13-(Speiial to The Statesman) Hih in the Colorado Rookies, three mites from the continental divide, intel lectuals, rntiMrians, artt. and citizen! from all over t e Mrld are here attending tie 'Goethe Bieentenri;) Convocation and Mu!ic fe5li'-l, June 27 through July 16. The festival i phenomenal for this little town which ha recently been revived from a dead mining town to a world famous ski re sort. Gathered here for thi? convo cation are such well-known in tellectuals as Dr. Albert Schweit zer, from French Equatorial Af rica, philosopher-doctor-muscian -theologian: Stephen Spender, poet, critic, and editor; Ern.t Simon, editor, educator, historian, and chairman of the department of education at Hebrew univer sity. Jerusalem. Jose Ortegay Gasset, Spain's greatest living philoropher; Char lies J". Burrkhardt, presentlv Swit zerland's minister to France; Thornton Wilder, thrice Pulitzer prize winning American novelist and playwright; Gerardus van der Leeuvv, professor of theologv at the University of Groningen, Neth erlands: and Halvdan Koht, Nor way's most eminent historian. Pav Ilomare to Goethe Ail these and many more greats rid nnt-so-greats are here in As ! pen to pay homage to Johann Wolfing von Goethe, the great German poet - philosopher. The celebration honors the 200th an niversary of Goethe's birth in 1749. The qn let, peaceful and, lofty settint' of Aspen (7,844 feet in elevation, surrounded by seven peaks over 14.000 feet high) seems . especially appropriate for a fest ival of such magnitude. In the "good old days" of the , mining boom here. Aspen was Colorado's second largest town. At that time.the town was blessed with an opera house where such notables as Mme. Schumann Heink sang and John L. Sullivan vied orally with John Barleycorn and "Gentleman Jim" Corbett reminisced of his great fighting career. But not since those days has Aspen seen anything to com pare with the hubbub, thecon fusion ?nd the significance of the present Goethe celebration. Aspen Rejuvenated Through the forming of the As pen company last year with Wal ter Paepcke, energetic board chair man of the Container Corporation of America (American Can), at the helm. Aspen has been refur bished, remodelled and repainted and placed in a position to host this grent festival. The town now has an airport, good hotel facili ties, plenty of rich mountain water, the longest skklift in the world, (3 miles to the top of the contin ental divide) and is forging ahead daily in its quest to.be great again. The celebration itself consists of a series of lectures by the in tellectuals and artists gathered here and concerts by the Min neapolis Symphony orchestra, di rected by Dimitri Mitropoulas, V ' . 3 S.. It is estimated that over 100.000 persons, intellectuals, musicians and those who come to gee what the celebration is all about will have visited the little town, daring the three-week! celebration. (Berko-Henry photo. Aspen. Colo.) who is aided by a host of world famous gust artirts. Isolation an Asset Many halve wondered why As pen was chosen for this conclave. Certainly Aspen, geographically or physically has nothing to do with Goethe, who spent most of. hjs life in Weimar, Germany. But. the very remoteness, isolation and relative inaccessibility of Aspen are regarded by the promoters of the Goethe festival as assets and the fact that Weimar is in the Soviet zone of Germany probably had much to do:with the choosing of this cradle in the Rockies as "the place for world philosophy in 1949. ; The lectures and music of the festival are held in an amphi theater with tent roof and ply wood acoustical sounding boards, and seat over 2,000 persons.
