School Bus Safety Law In Operation State police emphasized yester day that the new legislative act requiring motorists to stop when encountering a school bus that Is loading or unloading children U now in operation. The law makes it mandatory to top hen approaching from ei ther direction a school buj halt ed on a two-Ur.e highway. Ve hicles must remain stopped if and eo Jong as any children are leav ing the bu or crossing tre. high way. Only vehicles approaching tapped bus from the opposite di rection while on a highway hav ing more than two lanes are ex empted from the stopping require ment, officials explained. Drivers on three or four - lane roadways must stop when approaching a school bus halted on their side of the road. The law applies to all roads, streets and highways whether Ln cities or rural areas. Initial enforcement will consist of warnings for all but flagrant violators. State police said. Ar rests will be made for later offenses.
