Btranga as ft may seem to many, an examination of the nails may give information about cer tain conditions which may be present Peculiarly enough. It seems that disorders affecting the arteries may produce chances In the nails. Normally, the nail has a white. ereacent-shaped area at its base and, overlying the base of the nau, is film of skin or cuticle, which Is firmly fastened to the nalL One form of arterial disturb ance is known as Raynaud's dis ease. In this condition there Is a spasm of the blood vessels whjch reduces the flow of blood through them. There may be minor forms of this condition. In these disor ders, the layer of skin at the base of the nail becomes thin, and the material fastening the skin ta the nail extends outward over the nalL reran mt Nenrltts The same sort of N a condition may develop in a form of neu ritis. It has been found that when the nerves to the blood vessels have been cut to relieve the symp toms of Raynaud s disease, these abnormal conditions of the naUg disappear. If an artery Is blocked off. due to the formation of a dot or to s spasm, the growth ot the nails Is retarded, so that cutting the nails may be unnecessary for a period of months. The nails be come thick and rough, with ridges across them. The color of the nail also may become darker. In those cases in which the blood supply is greatly reduced. me naus may oecome very sensi tive, so that even slight pressu may cause excruciating pain. Ia some severs cases, the nails may become loose, dropping off. Disturbances of the circulation rarely cause infection of the nails, but the nails may be distorted la such cases. An infect Irm of the bone at the. ends of the toes or fingers may cause an attacess ts form under the nails. Of course, such a condition usually requires surgical treatment. Hence, it Is evident thst exam ination of the' nails is important, since It will sometimes give ! dence of severe disorders whlen may be present i QUESTIONS ANO ANSWEBJ B.D.: 'What can be done for piles?
