Bnndensen. 1LD. Wt hsvs. from time to time in this column, told mothers that. shortly after birth and thereafter a young baby should be given a thorough physical exam ination. And one of the important things that should be noted is the child's vision. , Poor eyesifht In 'grown-ups too often comes from neglect of some simple eye difficulty in early life. Even though the eyes are perfectly sound at birth, the eye sight may be lost through lack of use of the eyes if anything should interfere with the stimulation of vision during the period of eye development, such as eye diseases. Eye Defect Crosseye is probably the most important eye defect requiring early treatment, usually before the age of six. The crosseye most of ten is due to a defect in vision. such as farsightedness. Crosseye may be the result of an injury at the time of birth, causing paralysis of one of the eye mus cles, or it may develop when the vision of the eye is lost through some disease. If the vision in one eye is not as good as in the other, the child is not able to look at an object with both eyes, so that the eye which is worse turns in. This fre quently 'happens when the child's resistance is lowered as a result of some illness early in childhood. In treating crosseye, eye-glasses should be fitted as soon as possi ble. This may not be until the child is IS months to two years of age. Exercise of the eyes and training may be necessary. Some times the good eye is kept covered for a period of hours each day. which helps the development of the defective one. Surgery mar be required, especially if the crosseye Is due to paralysis jet the eye muscles. , There are other eye defects also, such as nearslghtednesa; farsight edness and astgmatism. t SWbLI Be Cerracte4 . Nearsightedness in young chil dren does not get worse. Severe ' astigmatism, which occurs when the front part of the eyeball I is not nerfer-tlv iharwH chnuM twa corrected with glasses. Farsight edness needs no correction until later on in childhood. i I If parents become too! much concerned about normal disturb ances of this type, the child mar become what Is known as ova. conscious and develop tics or habit spasms. i Eye Infection of vsrlouS tvnee may occur with symptoms such as redness, pain and tearms. i Theaa. of course, should receive prompt treatment by the physician.
