"Tha benefit of this policy are Uberal. that frankly, all that kp th company In business, are a fw little clauses In fin print.'.." Your health Written1 by Dr. Ilerman N.l Bandensen, MA Not so Ions ago i number of peopl on th south side of Chi cago became ill with a condition that puzzled their doctors for a while. It looked and acted like a typical pneumonia. At the time, it was recalled that some years ago an epidemic of a disease like In fluenza was first reported among Australian slaughterhouse work ef s in Queensland. Both ' of the diseases turned out to be Q fever. And now the organism which Hollywood On Parade By Gene Iiandsuker HOLLYWOOD Eddie Grubin, wheelchair-bound for the rest of his life, has just started a career as a nightclub entertainer. What's more, he and his partner, Tony Santro, have been packing the customers in. Eddie is 23, roly-poly, and ra dient of good humor, He was an army dentist in Manila when stricken by polio twb and a half years ago. Tony, also' 25, but slen der and unafflicted,; is a former soda-fountain mixologist. Togeth er they raise holy Ned with their floorshow. Eddie propels hirhself by the wheels of his chromium-plated wheelchair on to th little dance floor. Tony pops out of the scen ery. A loudspeaker system blares the brassy introduction of the Andrews Sisters' recorded "Boo gie Woogie Bugle Boy." Eddie dons a block wig, Tony a blonde one. The .Andrews Sister start sing ing. and Eddie and Tony, In per feet svehronization. ; mouth the words. The parody, with exagger ated expressions and gestures, is pretty funny. I The customers yell for more Now Eddie, toying with a scarf, and Tony, with a hat; on. are Judy Garland and Dick rjaymes sing ing "Aren't You Kirida Glad We Did?" Their larg repertoire ranges from Kirstert Flagstad to Red Ingte. On their "Carousel number, when Tony comes tb th lln. "fish Is my favorite per fume," Eddi slams' him In. the face with a real herring. Eddie started th record- act several years ago to entertain his fraternity at Temple University, where he learned dentistry. Soon, at night spots and banquets, the act was paying for his schooling He resumed it while being treat ed at the Warm Springs Founda tion. Eddie and Ton were In a southside nightclub: her when Movie Actress Hflen Walker caught their act and, as she says, "went berserk" about it. She help ed book them Into Larry Potter's supper club. Eddie says: "On our first num ber at every performance, people look at the wheelchair. On the second number you j can feel the act hit. When the .show's over, they've forgotten th wheelchair.' Just as Eddie, who drives his own specially equipped i car, lives along, and gets his; own meals, has forgotten it. causes this disease has been iden tified and it called the Rickettsia Theyll Do It Every Time By Jimmy j Hatlo sTRDAy THEy CLEANED OUT THE I I Ato D TODAY- (vpU GUESSED IT) Files in Temblechin's eewirtment- the Wish the hadn't- . It seems probabl hat th disease is contracted jfrom tat tle in many cases, but just what way it is transmitted to human beings is not yet definitely known. The symptoms of this condition include fever, headache,! aching In the muscles, chills and, usually, symptoms of pneumonia. 'I Such symptoms as sneezing.; blocking of the nose, and sore throat are not outstanding. Uusally there a cough, which is dry. Later ton in the disorder there may be physical findings of disturbances lit ji th lungs. Often, the spleen in t th left, upper part of the abdomen and the lymph glands throughout tbe body are enlarged. Fever pisy be as high as 102 and may last for from 5 to 14 days ji .! -Si' I. X-ray examination of the chest is helpful in the diagnosis..; jThe -X-ray examination helps to dis tinguish Q fever frorrtj : another disorder known as virus pneu monia. ! l ; v tT; A definite diagnosisvof Q fever can be made by finding 'the Rick ettsia burneti in the blood, or by finding an increase in the anti bodies against the Q fever organ isms. j . . I X Blood Test . f j".' It is not recommended that ef forts be made to isolate the Rick ettsia organism, except in a ; well regulated laboratory, because thou working with it seem to asily con tract th disease.. Hence, thej best method of diagnosis is to i test the blood for the presence of the antibodies. I Jt Q fever is rarely a ' fatal condi tion and. in the majority of in stances, recovery occurs without complications. j , i' Persons should be aware of the occurrence of this disorder so that, if symptoms which Ijsuggest it dejrelop, the proper testi may be carried out for making all accurate diagnosis.
