Growers to
Raise Acreage

Oregon onion growers plan to
increase total production 13 per
cent by planting some 5.300 acres
of onions in 1948. surveys made by
the crop reporting service this
week show. List year's production
at harvest s 4.600 acres.

Mme. Irene Joliot - Curie, whose
communist husband heads
France's atomic energy commis
sion, was freed from Ellis Island
1 Friday to go ahead w ith a lecture
trip in this country.
The internationally - known
woman physicist, daughter of the
discoverers of radium and herself
a Nobel prize winner, was de-
tained by immigration officials
upon her arrnal from Paris by
plane.
She said at a news conference
today that she was not a com
munist but was sympathetic to
communism in many respects.

Builds Plant
At Lebanon

Sweet Homo has launched con
struction of a plywood plant Justf
east of Lebanon near Snow Peak j

about September 1 it will give
employment to approximately 100 i
men. Allen Jones, who with his

W., operate the company, revealed

Lone Contest
Develops in
Salem Election
With a little over two weeks
remaining for filing of candidacies,
only one race has so far developed
for a City of Salem office, that of
municipal judge. All incumbents
have filed for re-election on the
non partisan ballot. The filing
deadline Is April 5.
During the past week a single
filing was made at the city re
corder's office, when Elmer
Amundson became the fourth
aspirant for the judgeship.
The candidates who have filed,
as of last night, are:
Mayor
Robert L. Elfstrom, incumbent.
Treasurer
Paul H. Hauser, incumbent.
Municipal Judge
W. W. McKinney, incumbent,
William H. Crawford, Peery T.
Buren and Elmer Amundson.
Alderman
Ward 1 James H. Nicholson,
incumbent.
Ward S Claude Jorgensen, In
cumbent. Ward 5 David O'Hara, Incum
bent. Ward 7 Howard Maple, In
cumbent. (Aldermen In wards 2. 4 and 6
are not required to run this year).

panels, while Sweet Home pro
duction is sold to Harbor Plywood
corporation of Hoquiam, Wash.,
Jones said.

The plant will contain 35,000
squars feet of floor space, with
the main quarters measuring
160 x 200 feet, Jones said. Produc
tion is estimated at 24,000 feet
on a three-eighths-inch basis per
year. Two shifts will be operated.
The Oregon Holstein Breeders
association will hold a sale of
dairy stock," representing some of
the greatest blood lines in the
country, at the. Pacific Interna
tional Livestock exposition
grounds, Portland, Monday, April
S, starting at 11 ajn.
The sale is primarily to supply
foundation stock to new breeders
planning to enter the business. The
animals were each passed on and
approved by an association com
mittee composed of Al Lindow,
Beaverton, president; Edgar
Grimes, Harrisburg. vice-president;
G. P. Ireland, Forest Grove,
treasurer, and S. B. HalL Portland,
retiring national director.
The sale will be managed by R.
E. "Rube" Everly, noted Holstein
breeder who formerly managed
the famous Carnation farms near
Seattle and now is president of
Everly Livestock Exporters, Inc.
In addition to 40 head entered
from Oregon, approximately 20
will be shipped here through the
Washington Holstein Breeders as
sociation. All animals will carry
health test records for tuberculo
sis and abortion, and many of
them were Bang's vaccinated as
calves.
