Newell, Salem native who died at her residence, 1690 Ferry it., Wednesday following a long ill ness, will be held from the Clough-Barrick chapel Saturday at 1:30 p.m., with interment in Belcrest Memorial park. Mrs. Newell was born In Salem March 20, 1893, and attended school near Pratum before moving to Wena tehee. Wash. From Wen atchee, she moved to Fossil, Ore., where she married George C Newell on Oct. 20, 1917. After World War I the couple lived in Prineville and other ci ties throughout the state before returning to Salem in 1939. Mrs Newell was a member of the Or der of Eastern Star and the Meth odist church. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Edward Creecy of Estacada; a son, George C. Newell, jr., of Seattle; three sisters, Mrs. Ada Smith of Portland, Mrs. Fan nie Morris of Portland and Mrs. Grace Millett of The Dalles; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Union officials said a strike vote was discussed. Regional heads of the CIO International Woodworkers of America recent ly sent out strike vote ballots to strengthen the position of union negotiators discussing possible wage increases with employers. The workers are expected to be on the Job again tomorrow. Portland Traction Company Asks for Jurisdiction Ruling Public Utilities Commissioner John H. Carkin Thursday after noon took under advisement the question of whether he has Juris diction to receive from the Port- The Statesman. Salem. Oregon. Friday, March land Traction company petition for an Increase in rates. The question was presented by Gordon Steele, company presi dent, and Clarence Phillips, com pany attorney. Pending investigation and de cision by the utilities commis sioner the petition for an increase in rates was returned to Portland by the traction company officials. Carkin said the question of whether he is authorized to re ceive the company's petition- for rat increase might .involve a number of - legal - complications. He would not elaborate.
