Albany School Needs Outlined ALBANY Two new grade school buildings are needed im mediately, Dr. C. A. Huffaker, school planning consultant with the University of Oregon, told a large group of .patrons of Albany school district No. 5 at an open meeting of the school board this week. The need came from rapid growth of population: both within the boundaries of the district and in surrounding areas. Recent statistics resulting from a census of p re-school children In the district show 1.376, and the present enrollment in the first to sixth grades is 944. This .means, the speaker said, that there will probably be an average of 200 per grade by 1953. Right now. Dr. Huffaker said, from 10 to 12 new elementary grade rooms are needed to house pupils already here, and Albany now has only 16 adequate grade rooms while needing' approximately 45, Huff aker said. New Sites Obtained The audience was dumbfound ed when the speaker made the statement that present costs of school buildings range irom u, 000 to $22,000 a room. He also stated I that Albany . senior high school: is becoming overcrowded and the present facilities will- be adequate by 1951 only to accom modate residential students, leav ing tuition students to be other wise provided for. Tht school board of district Tio. B recently acquired three new building sites, one located in the rapidly growing section of the city east of Geary street;, a sec ond in the Sunrise addition, and the third Just south of KWIL radio fetation in southwest Albany.
