- 1 f ! , 14 The- Statesman. Salem, Oregon. Friday. Horwnbw 15. 1948 Typical Unemployed Veteran from Job Board Files Emerges t Oregon'! typical unemployed veteran! is well along In his thirties, semi-skilled, lives in town, may have a minor disability,; worked both before and after the war, has been out of work eight or nine months, has contacted several employers ; and the local employment office but hasn't found suitable work where he can ebtain housing. This statement by the unemployment compensation commission was based on special ' interviews with approximately 700 long-time claimants. As administrator for the readjustment allowance sec tion of the GI bill of. rights in Oregon, the commission ' pointed out that only about 3H per cent of the 110,000 returned veterans now were drawing - readjustment allowances and that very few cases of outright chiselling bad been found by repeated investi gations. "We have found it necessary to turn over these cases to the- vet erans administration for possible prosecution," Silas Gaiser, com mission administrator, declared. Gaiser said other alleged irregu larities were being investigated and appropriate action would be taken. Of the veterans whose charac teristics were listed. 82 per cent were 30 years or older, 73.2 per cent live in cities, 45.2 per cent were skilled or semi-skilled and 36 per cent had worked since be ing discharged from military serv ice. About 12 per cent had been out of the service less than seven months and 30 per cent more than a year. In addition to the skilled and semi-skilled workers, nearly a fourth had experience in cleri cal, sales and service lines, while Standard 6 per cent claimed professional f?- and managerial qualifications. Latest count showed 54,382 vet erans claims, of which 3,195 were for self-employment allowances. Claimants who drew at least one check numbered 46,582 while 152 received their full allowances, now averaging over $800 each. Veterans discharged after ten months or more service are en titled to 52 weekly allowances of $20 while seeking suitable work. held a Halloween party for them with prizes for best costumes. Thirty-seven boys and girls of the "intermediate grades now each have a desk of their own. They are making folders in their art class to be used for their weekly readers and for art work. The designs are original, mostly in the fall theme. Sixth grade pupils are study ing South America and making a map. Seventh grade pupils made a map of Africa while studying that country. Eighth grade pupils made posters of the bill of rights while studying democracy and learning how to use the library. Rickey Beginners Finish Two Books FOUR CORNERS Beginners at Rickey school have read two books so far this year, a red one and a yellow one. They are de lighted with their ability to count and write the numbers to 20. The pupils of the second grade are making health scrap books. Mrs, M. Barham, the primary teacher. Irregularly lower trends ruled from the start to the final half hour with dealings slow. The pace quickened a bit as tads arrived but there "was no runaway. Gams of fractions to a point or more were well in the majority at the close with a few "thin" issues en joying wider jumps. Transfers totalled 950,000 shares compared with 1X50,000 Wednesday. Demand was based partly on the idea the list was due for a techni cal comeback. Rallying cotton and grains tuoyed sentiment Pleasing company statements auo were helpful. Many customers held aloof, however, pending the effects of i if) ng goods prices, consumer resistance and the outcome of wage disputes.
