Barney Van Onsenoord was elected to head the March of Dimes drjye for 1847. Other offi cers selected were: Vice president, Mr. David Wright; secretary, Dorothy Cornelius, and treasurer, Lawrence Fisher. Dr. W. J. Stone was selected as medical advisor for the group and plans are being made to send him to New. York City for a con ference at national foundation headquarters. Representation ia also planned for a regional meet ing in San Francisco October 7-8. A vote of appreciation was given retiring officee: Dr. Stone, chairman; Houck, vice chairman, and Mrs. Ruby Bergsvik, secre tary, for their efforts the past year. Eugene Hall, Portland, state rep resentative, and representatives from several local organizations attended. Coos Bay Ship Dispute Probed SAN FRANCISCO. July 12-JP) Nathan P. Feinsinger, special rep resentative of Secretary of Labor Schwellenbach, arrived here to day to investigate an AFL-CIO maritime jurisdictional dispute at Coos Bay. Ore., the effect! of which have spread to tha cast coat and interfered with shipping operations there. Felnninger held no formal meet ings during tha day. but discussed with the various interested unions the procedure for his investiga tion. The Coos Bay dispute began when CIO longshoremen refused to work the American Pacific Steamship company's SS Mello Franco. War Blamed For Poor China Distribution SHANGHAI, July 12-P)-The director of tha Chinese national relief and rehabilitation adminis tration declared today the rav ages of war not politics had dammed the flow of food to China's starving millions. The director, T. F. Tsiang. told newsmen he had instructed his representative in Washington to try to persuade UNRRA Director General LaGuardia to rescind an order reducing relief for needy China. Tsiang styled "misleading' al legations that only half of one per cent of Chinese relief filtered through government blockades to stricken communist areas. "Local interference by both sides" was conceded, but Tsiang declared Ufeae violated orders is sued by both Generalissimo Chi ang Kai-Shek and the communist command. 9 Reclamation Projects Aided BOISE. Idaho, July H-("-Nine reclamation projects in Idaho Oregon, Washington and western Montana will benefit from the 1947 department of interior ap propriationa bill signed by Pres ident Truman, R. J- Newell, re gional director for the U.S. bureau of reclamation at Boise announced today. Work planned for the projects includes: Owyhee project, Oregon Cora pletion of tha Fletcher-Gulch wasteway, laterals and drainage systems under a $125,000 appro priation. Deschutes project, Oregon Construction of the 50,000-acre north unit will be almost com pleted under a $1,716,837 appro priation. Son of Frisco Stock Exchange Head Guilty REDWOOD CITY. Col if .. Next on Harvest Slate Cherry picking is rapidly draw ing to a close and string beans will be the next big crop to be harvested in this area, the Marion county farm labor office reported. In reviewing the past month's sta tistics, the office estimated there were 150 per cent more cherries this year than last. The number of farmers and the number of orders for workers placed in the Salem farm labor office were as follows: Salem 338 farmers, 4658 orders; Wood burn 87 farmers, 1256 orders, and Silver ton. 25 farmers and 558 orders. Youths 'placed during June from Salem totaled 2687; Wood burn 235 and Silverton 208. Platoons of younger workers supervised by an older person were used, Gladys Turnbull, farm labor assistant, said. The total amount of seasonal "workers was 7256; divided as fol lows: 2837 men, 1042 women, 3130 youth and 247 Mexicans. This is a 2194 increase in placements over 1045. 500 at Buyers' Strike Meeting PORTLAND. July 12-4VWhile butter prices sagged and pickets protested price boosts, some 500 Portia ndars turned out for a "buyers' strike rally- here tonight. The rally audience, after hearing-speakers declare that prices would zoom if the OPA is once permanently buried, voted to urge Oregon congressmen to back effective price control. Richard L. Neuberger, Portland author and keynote speaker, de clared that a ."buyers' strike" wouldn't work and suggested a special legislative session to enact price control. Senate Rejects Rise in Silver WASHINGTON, July 12-(P-For a third time, the- senate to day rejected, 54 to 25, a house proposal to sell treasury silver at 71.11 cents an ounce. Southern and western senators generally abandoned party lines to team up in a third demand that the house accept a 90.3 cent price despite three previous adverse house votes. Meanwhile thousands of treas ury and postoffice employes may have to wait for their pay checks. Funds to meet them are in the $1,600,000,000 appropriation bill which has been deadlocked for two months by the congressional silver dispute. VA to Review Special Cases The veterans administration will review the cases of veterans who have had entitlement under the GI bill deducted for time spent in the .army specialized training program or the navy V-12 program, it was announced by Wayne F. Smith, Salem VA training officer. Under a new directive from Washington, D. C. it is now po sible. in some cases, to credit vet erans for time spent in these training programs, Smith said. Heretofore the VA has deducted all time apent in V-12 or ASTP. Veterans affected by the new ruling were urged to write the VA immediately in order to speed up action in the reconsideration of their cases. Italy Parties Form Cabinet ROME. July 12-(-Rudolh M. Weyerhaeuser, 78, pioneer leader in the Minnesota lumber industry, died at his home early today. He had been suffering from a heart ailment for several weeks. , Weyerhaeuser, born in Coal Valley, 111., entered the lumber business at Rock Island. 111., in 1891 with a brother. John. He was president of the Potlatch For ests Inc., Lewiston. Idaho; chair man of the board of Northwest Paper Co., Cloquet; a director of Weyerhaeuser Timber Co., North ern Pacific railway, and the First National bank of St. Paul. 21 More Jews Slain in Poland WARSAW, July 12-JP)-Twen-ty-one more Jews have been killed in fresh outbreaks of perse cution, government reports said today, and violence against Jews appeared to be spreading despite government efforts at suppres sion. Officials blamed outlawed band hiding in forests for the latest killings, which occurred on high ways and trains between Lodz and Breslau. Jews have been dragged from automobiles and trains and shot by groups which the government declared were "fascist reactionar ies" such as NSZ bandits. Winslow'a Gang PUBLIC INVITED Dispute Proves No Deterrent To Road Work County road work will not be delayed by a dispute over owner ship of the land near Coffee bar in the Willamette river where Marion county is getting rock, county officials said Friday after a conference with the disputing parties. The county will proceed with the work and if Murl Smidt. who claims to own the land for which Herman Coyle has contracted with the county, wishes to start legal action, ownership of the land will be established and a jury will as sess damages,- they announced. Coyle signed the original con tract and when Smidt claimed ownership a supplemental con tract was filed with him by the county court. Coyle represents that he and his predecesors had title to the land for over 80 years and he is now the sole owner. The Smidt contract will be held in abeyance, the court said. Marines Near China Fighting NANKING. July 12-P)-ChI-nese communists were reported attacking or massing troops to day around three north China ci ties where U.S. marines stand guard, dispatches from Peiping asserted. -' Aa General Marshall conferred with Generalissimo Chiang K Shek on what was believed to be a new compromise, reports pour ed in of battles f in potentially explosive north China. One account said communists were attacking immediately south of the Shantung port of Tsingtao, where marines only recently pre pared defense positions for even tualities. Another report said the com munists had massed heavily in the areas of the two Hopeh cities of Peiping and Tientsin, to the northwest of Tsingtao, where other marines are on duty. Seventy-five other vessels tem porarily were immobilized as AFL seamen, said by union spokesmen to be 5,000 strong, left their jobs to picket ClO-manned vessels in retaliation against a CIO boycott of AFL-Manned ships on the west coast. 20 Tumble. in Truck Mishap WALLA WALLA, Wash, July 12-P)-A picnic for youthful strawberry pickers ended tragic ally here late last night when the truck in which they , were riding overturned at an intersection. Five girls were hospitalized for more serious injuries but all were re ported to be improving today. Fifteen other younsters ranging in age from 10 to 15 were suffer ing from shock and minor cuts. Patrolmen said the younsters were standing in the truck and the accident was caused when they shifted their Weight to the other side of the vehicle as it rounded the corner.
