Coontz, who saw action in the Aleutians, Guadalcanal, in the Gilberts, Marshall and Philippines and at Okinawa with task force No. 58, has reported for recruit ing duty at the Salem U. S. navy recruiting substation. Chief Quar termaster R. B. Fallon announced the addition to his staff Monday. Coontz, who joined the Portland navy recruiting station from Dal las, Tex., enlisted in San Francis co in 1937. Following his recruit training, he served on the USS Lexington until 1939, then aboard the Henderson, Morris and Mel ville and in September; 1941, transferred aboard the USS Mc Leish, operating off the .English coast during the blitzes. He was returned to the United. States in 1942 and on the USS Mead served with the Pacific fleet. Youths to Register for Beaver Boy. State PORTLAND, May 6-(;P)Youths from 15 to 17 years In age will be eligible to attend the 1946 Boys State at Oregon State college June 30-July 7, the American Legion announced. Practice in city, county arid state government are offered at the event.
