PACE EIGHT TH OREGON STATESMAN, 8oIm, Oregon. Tuesday Morning. May 7. IM Unbeaten Senators Eye WIL Mark Tie in Wenatchee Opener Tonight Riding -high and showing no signs of stepping down, Salem's Senators take their 11 -straight win einge to Wenatchee tonight for an attempt to tie a Western International league record in the three gam aeries opener with the pie-season favored Chiefs. If Mgr. Frisco Edwards' flock can do it again tonight pier will tie the loop record of 11 games won at the outset of a season made by the Yakima team of 1938. .. . - 'Skipper Frisco announced before he left with his heroes Monday that Lefty Carl Gunnarson will be Oi the Senator mound tonight. They come home again next Tues day night to open a 7-game series with Yakima. Other games to night in the league find Victoria at Yakima. Bremerton at Tacoma and Vancouver at Spokane. The 1 Senators wowed a gather ing of 3083 paid Sunday at Wa ters park by sweeping both games from Spokane. 3-1 and 4-3 in 13 innings, and also the entire series. Long Lee Fallin got credit for winning the first one and allowed four hits. A two-run double by George Vico in the eighth, fol lowed by a single by -Bob Cavi ness. all off Bob Kinnaman, won the thriller. The second game, a ding-dong battle all the way. wound up as Steve Cerkin victory, his fifth ef the campaign. Gerkin went to the mound in the seventh inning after Rookie Claude Janeway and Andy Adams had split up the toil and blanked the enemy the rest of the way. Then in the 13th after Kubiak had singled and Kerr had walked. Thin Man Steve biffed the single to left that won his ball game. Pee Wee Bass, little lefthander with the Spokes, toiled with strong arm and stout heart all the way. Salem, behind in the sixth, 2-0, got three quick runs on Woody Salmon's pinch single with the bases full and Kubiak's long fly to lett. Skipper Frisco's wizardry stood out all over the thrill-filled park In the second game as both pinch hitters he used came through with hits and his maneuvering of pitch ers worked out to perfection. The one bad part of Sunday's almost purely successful outing was the fact that Luke Lucchesi's bitting streak was stopped cold at nine games. Li'l Luke took the col lar in eight trips up but kept bustling all the way. Sundays 3083 hiked the first Week's attendance at home to a i ring 13.394. Question of the day: Are they that food or are they Just lucky? Both, brother, both! And when you have a combination of the two you've got the real reason why the town Senator is so far strictly a terrific operator. We maintained all along Frisco Edwards flock would do okeh when the bell rang and, other than for one position, the outit will keep right on doing okeh- They've overdone it so far but the jump they hae on the rest of the WI nine will allow for the bad nights that are sure to come They're just lucky. you say Well, maybe. But the hustling Frisco and they're the finest gang of scrappers you'll find anywhere make for their own breaks with that hustle stuff All in all. the first week at home was a very successful one. The Frisco won all their games, won the hearts of the multitude, won the respect of every club in the league, won for Frisco the now well-known fact that he does know his baseball ABC's, and even XYZ's not only as an um pire but as a manager, won a new first-week attendance record (drew 13.394 paid the firt week. Which is well over one half the 21.000-odd pulled the entire 1942 season) and won the admiration as a top asset to the town itself. In fact, about the only thing that wasn't won during the week was four arguments with the umpires by Frisco. But then Spokane lost more than four of those also. To be nasty about it, the Spokes should be right happy the loused up sched ule doesn't have them back again all season. They probably won't even pass through here en route to their post-season homes in Cali fornia The week was a tough break for Likeable Mel Cole, try ing to stay on as Spokane manager despite his lack of experience, but If anyone had told him before coming here that his pitching staff would turn out to be so many wild men he'd probably laughed him self silly. As it is right now. hes on the silly side but not from laughing About that attendance One week at home drew 13,394. Nine more at that rate means far over the 100,000-for-the-season goal hoped for. Luke Sek WI League Stolen Base Record Frank Joseph Lucchesi, the likeable Luke of the Solons who would surely pull his share of the ballots were a cast taken right now for the most popular on the club how he does hustle for the Frisco flock! , i hot after the stolen base record in the league. And from the looks of Luke's flying start, he'll get It too. He has seven to date and a long time left to get 40 more. The late Henry (Marty) Martinez of Spokane's 1940 oower house holds the all-time high with 48. Soeaking of records. Luke's hitting skein was stopped at nine, but he had a long string of tall clouting to do If he was to top the loop's all-time consecutive game mark. J. Wellington (Wimpy) Quinn went SO games for Vancouver In 1939 for the record. Quinn Is the former U of Oregon "Wimpy And If arw more of the current clan has league record aspirations, they can look at these two and shudder: Highest batting average. J. Smead Jolley. Spokane 1940r .373 Most runs batted in, J. Smead Jolley, Spokane, '40. 181 Judo Jacket Jaunt at Armory Plum for Fang Those five circuit swats the Yakimas made In last Friday nightSs game in Vancouver only tied a single game league mark. Glenn Wright's Wenatchee of 1939 bashed five In one game, too. But the nine round-trippers hit aggregately by the Yaks and Vancouver Friday does establish a new record in the league for one game, and perhaps fti all organized baseball for that matter. You'd have to see that Van couver park to realize just how easy it is to hit a homer there, if you rap a high fly to right field. Matchmaker Flton Owen has produced any number of hair-raisers with his rasslers at the local Garden the past few years, but the crunch customers who go home of a Tuesday night wondering what keeps the gladiators all in one piece haven't seen anything yet. Tonight the boys put on the judo jackets for the main event stint, and if you've never seen 'emigo at it in the thunder coats you haven't seen slam-bang rasping at its best. Jerking each other around in the jackets makes the pet trick of hair-pulling seem pikerish by comparison. SALEM'S OWN: Lang Le FaUin.
