Captain Maxwell has been in the army medical corps for 44 months and was in Liberia for a year. Accompany ing her was an adopted orphan, Brenda, who she brought "from Liberia. The captain, a native of Salem and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Maxwell who moved to Los Angeles several years ago, re cently has been chief nurse at Camp San Luis Obispo. Formerly she was night super visor of a 3000-bed hospital at Camp Livingston, La.; principal chief nurse at Camp Callan, Calif., in cha'rge of a 1200 -bed hospital, and chief nurse at the Papago Park, Ariz., German pris on camp. Her positions have been under circumstances in which medical and nursing staffs were chosen without regard to race. Captain Maxwell is on terminal leave in Portland and expects soon to return to her pie-war post at Los Angeles county hos pital. Pleads Guilty To Shoplifting Carl A. Mertz, 1190 Oak st.. pleaded guilty to a charge of larceny from a building, Wednes day, and Circuit Judge E. M. Page continued until Saturday his decision as to sentence. Judge Page said the district attorney will make a further in vestigation because of conflicting statements by Mertz as to his past record. Mertz was apprehended by City Police Detective George V. Ed wards Tuesday in downtown Sa lem as he attempted to exchange in one store a sport coat he ad mittedly had stolen from another store a few minutes before. Such was the conclusion reach ed at a conference held Monday at the state library building of officers of veterans j agencies. Present at the conference were Don Goode, state veterans' con tact officer and member of the veterans' employment j advisory committee; H. C. Saalfeld, Marion county service officer, and Robey S. Ratcliffe, veterans'! employ ment representative of jthe U. S. employment service. j Other matters discussed at the meeting included the local vet erans' labor situation, job open ings and replacements,; veterans' housing program and building priorities. It was also stated that many unemployed veterans Hie not yet employed because theyj prefer to draw their readjustment allow ance. Many Jobs are available to veterans, it was brought out. which, although not always of the best type, yet pay "far more than the $20 weekly allowance."
