Brown is Notified r He Destroyed Two NazirPlanes SANTA MONICA, Calif., Sept '20.Firsr Lt.' Lewis R. Brown, of 2631 Laurel ave., Salem, Ore., who is now at AAF Redistribution Station No. 3 rhere, has recently .been notified that he ispfficially credited with two German planes destroyed, mrce prooaDir destroyed. . and iree others damaged. A P-47 fighter pilot. Lieutenant Brown ran up this score . on a Ingle mission on . December 22, when he participated in a fighter weep across Germany. After his encounter with the enemy planes, fcls P-47 was hit by flak and set fire, causing him t to bail put directly into aGerman army camp. Veils Experiences , . - ; ; "Our 18 Pr47's Jiad just 'crossed sue uerman ooraer when we were notified that there were 'bandits' la the area.. Reminiscent of annual autumn eanning days of aur youth is apple butter with ift spicy frag rance. Many a 'modern house wife feels that her canning ac - tivities are not complete until she's put a few Jars down , for winter eating.; j Here's a basic recipe "for fruit butter and you can use pears, peaches, apples or prunes, i FRUIT BUTTER Cook fruit with nnlv a water, when soft, run through a coarse sieve or colander.' Skins are cooked with the fruit to add flavor. To each quart of pulp add 1 cup sugar either brown or white,; 1 teaspoon cinnamon and ' V Jeaspoon cloves. Cook very lowly in a shallow pan until butter Is thick. Be careful not . to let the fruit scorch. j 1 Another Subject of distinctly autumn cookery is green toma toes, much neglected in my esti mation. As a meat accompani-, ment, sliced green tomatoes dipped in flour and broiled in butter can't be beat. Sometimes the cook likes to put just a little sugar in the flour. Baked Danish or other small winter squash is another sure fire favorite for early fall days. Some cooks who like to give different flavor to their dishes, sprinkle a squash with a little nutmeg just after It comes from the oven. I ! Fall fruits take a prominent place in the menus these Sep tember days. Apple quarters, dropped into syrup, slightly colored with red, and allowed to poach until done, will make salad if chilled. pilot .said, prevented him from receiving credit for the other three 4. 1 . M . pruuauies, since ne never re turned to the base that day to be interrogated. ; " ' "My ammunition was almost gone when 1 1 was jhit by 'flalC he said. The ship caught fire, and I was burned about the eyes and Wrists. -My coat sleeve and pant leg were almost burned away, and I kept passing out and reviving again. I bailed out at 12,000 feet, and passed out just after I left the ship.1 1 woke up at about 800 feet and popped my chute." : Was Prisoner - janaing in a German prison camp, he was taken prisoner, hos pitalized, and interned in a prison camp until April 29, when he was liberated by the 1 14th Armored Division. . Prior to entering the service in September of 1942, Lt Brown was employed by the ; Columbia Air craft Corporation in Portland, Ore. He is a graduate of Salem high school. Now wearing the air medal with five oak leaf clusters, he has a purple heart due to be presented him soon. - 162nd Combat Team of Oregon Commended For Gallantry, Skill "Your troops have displayed the highest degree of gallantry, skill, tenacity and fortitude in fighting a resourceful and deter mined enemy under adverse con ditions of weather and on exceed ingly difficult terrain," Maj.
