Clark received the presidential ci tation and silver star posthumous Ir September at the American Legion state convention in Port land. '' His parents,' Mr. and Mrs. Ver non Clark, formerly oC this dis trict, but residents of Portland at present, accepted the presenta tions. - - - The citation was for conspicuous gallantry whil serving with the Eighteenth Marines, Second CUvl- lion, during action on Saipan, July 2, 1944. When forward movement of our troops In one section was being held up by heavy fire from : Japanese emplacement, Clark, on his own initiative exposed himself to intense enemy fire while advancing on the emplace ment, and succeeded la destroying it with demolitions. '- Mr. and Mrs. Clark received letter with the citation from Gen. A. A. Vandergrift, commandant of the marine corps. Private Clark attended Hayes- vQle grammar school, and Par rtsh Junior high. He enlisted In the marine corps In September, 1943, and went overseas In De cember. He was a member of the Boy Scouts and active in local sports. He had his eighteenth birthday a few days before he was killed. Besides his parents, a brother, Stanley, survives. 91st Division II On Furlough !
