Stenerson, whose wife, , Mrs. Raymond Stenerson, resides Jit 1875 N. Capitol st, Salem, Ore., ' has been awarded the bronze star for heroic service on Okinawa. In making the award, Ma. Gen. J. ML. Bradley, commanding! the 86th division, cited Captain Sten- , erson for leading his men through a withering barrage of Japanese mortar and machine gun fire in an assault on a high ridge. "Even after being seriously . wounded his aggressiveness- and insurmountable spirit continued to inspire the men under his com mand and are in keeping with the highest of military traditions,' Captain Stenerson is a company commander in the 383rd infantry regiment. Boyd Hilton, veteran newspaper; man who resigned to spend full time working his timber tract east of Silverton. , i j Albert Castillo Here j On 18-Day Leave j Visiting with members of his family and friends on an 18-days leave in Salem, is Albert Castillo, seaman 1c in the coast guard service. Castillo, who graduated from Salem high school in 1943, has two years of service behind him, one year spent in Ketchikan, Alaska, four months training at Groton, Conn., in the signal serv ice, and the last six , months on tne coast guard cutter, . Lauinger, husband of Mrs. Nellie Lauinger, 60 East Turner road, Salem, Ore., has been credited by his officers with blaying a major part in the repulse of a serious Jap attack on his unit 1 Sergeant Lauinger, now an as sistant squad leader in company D, 136th "Bearcat" infantry regi ment, 33rd division, was a private first class in the machine gun platoon at the time. His company, dug-in on the reverse slope of a hill in the mountainous' northern Luzon, was subjected to increas ingly intense Japi mortar and ar tillery fire. I ! . . i At the height jof the barrage. ReeYes Qets DFC And Army Release FORT LEWIS, Wash.-(Special) -First Lieutenant G. E. Reeves received the distinguished flying cross on the eve of his release from' active duty, but it is diffi cult to tell which of the two events pleased him the most! Awarded the medal for excep tional resourcefulness in his nine months of air adventures'with the luftwaffe, Lt. Reeves also holds the air medal with three clusters, the American defense and Euro pean':! theater ribbon with four bronze stars. He helped organize the men with 'plan of attack and led them to the top of the hill. Then, heedless of a rain of machine gun and rifle fife, Sgt. Lauinger went over the crest of the hill in front of his men. Under the Inspiring leader ship the Japs were driven from the hill. I Lauinger was a truck driver for the Pein Box and Crate Co. in Portland, Ore., before his induc tion. He joined the 136th in Oc tober 1942 at Fort Lewis, Wash, and trained with his outfit in the Mpjave desert before sailing for overseas service. He has spent over two years in the Hawaiian islands, on New Guinea, j on Morotai is land before coming to Luzon. He wears the combat infantry man's badge, the good conduct medal, the Asiatic-Pacific , ribbon with two battle j stars, i and the Philippine liberation; ribbon ! wjth one battle star. Ing a 15 day leave with his par ents, Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Mason, and Mrs. Mason's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kay Miller, and will report to a! California poet after his leave. Bronze Star to Salem Marine Sgt James F. Snook, USMCR, son of Mr. Ambrose Snook, route 4, box 57, Salem, has been dec orated with the bronze star med al for' gallantry in action with the Fourth marines on I wo Jimi "from February 19 to March 16.' Sergeant Snook,' who entered the service in April, 1942, was tank gunner during the action. When his gun Jammed so that could not be repaired from inside the tank, he disregarded personal safety by emerging from the tank under heavy mortar and small arms fire to repair the weapon. His wife, Mrs. Frances . Snook, resides in Portland. CpL Lea II. nsri. aosi sf Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Flux of DaUas, sent word ) the meritorious serv ice plaque awarded his unit, the 216th quartermaster salvage, re pair company i in June. The cita tion stated tht for superior exe cution of duty In the performance of exceptionally difficult tasks from January 1 to April, 30, 1945 the company rendered meritorious service in the accomplishment of its numerous duties on the con tinent Throughout the period the unit achieved and maintained a high standard of discipline and demonstrated superior ! perform-, ance in every duty it was as signed." The conduct - of the com- pany was "in keeping with the high tradition of the military serv ice."
