By Walter C Beek r " Principal Bush School - The week of November 5 to 11 has been designated this year for the 24th annual observance of American : Education week, the general theme of which is to be Education for New Tasks". , American Education week pro vides school people with an excel lent opportunity for a concerted; nationwide effort to improve pub lic understanding of the work of the schools. As a contribution this year to Education Week, I shall attempt to review the effort that schools are making in supplying . food needs for school children. Need en Increase Salem schools are faced with an ever-increasing number of chil dren who do not go home for the noon meal or are in need of sup plemental feeding. We have an increased number of boys and girls who come in from outlying areas In buses and a great number must! stay because both 'parents' arc in Industry. The schools interest in the school lunch : centers . around the relationship between eating and the child's health and growth, and the ways in which the school lunch can be used in the health instruc tion program, ; i Gennlne Ceneera I - ' Schools of today have a genuine concern lor children's physical growth; for the- relation which normal physical growth has to mental hygiene, personality de velopment, educational progress. Schools show an extensive interest in meals children eat during the school day and to the education of children and parents regarding modern nutrition. It is in the latter, the educa tional connection, that' the school Ladies t Enroll How! . Exercise Classes including Ballet ani Ta ; r Hollywood Dance Studio 1S9S N. The itme has come when we are giving careful study of children nutrition in relation tp child growth, to education, and to community improvement. The school lunch program now can be said to have been accepted gener ally as an important phase of the school health and educational pro gram. Salem schools already have come to the front in developing the school lunch and the lunch room as a true laboratory In which the theoretical and the practical can be brought together. Meal time is good time to teach food Selection, nutrition, table manners, practices of personal hygiene, food preparation,' refrigeration, milk pasteurization, fly control' and cleanliness, of food handlers. " Seosns Attractive The dining rooms thus far es tablished' are being made more at tractive through the -use of inex pensive decorations such as plants and pictures. Health posters, ex hibits and other materials help tp make the dining room more pleas ant Pupils help in keeping the cafeteria and dining room in or-! der during the 'mealtime and as sist with' the serving of the meat ; The lunchroom thus becomes the natural laboratory for1 much of the program of health instruction at the same time that it makes a ma jor contribution to children's nor mal physical growth and mainte nance of health.
