Kit ELEVEN New WAVEa Center WiU : Open Today A new WAVES recruitirif cen ter, designed to erv the Salem end nrby Willamette ' valley area, win bt formally opened at . x:30 P. i m today v at 237 North ' liberty street on the main display floor 1 the Portland General .Electric company, according to Recruiting Specialist A. C. Ftie- aen, in charge of the Salem US navy substation. The new center was contributed and built by a group of patriotic Salem! firms and workmen. - The electric company contributed . the space and furnishings through the courtesy of William M." Hamilton, division manager. The new office was designed by Al Brant, busi ness agent of the Building Trades council. It wa built by members of the council, William HeUton and Hugh Averette, carpenters, and Sam Patzer and Don Macklin, painters. WAVES signs were con tributed by the R. W Frost In dustrial Designers; Inc. Building material was contributed by the Keith Brown' Building Supply company. The new office wUl be present ed to the area by Lt. (jg) Lucia Brown, ranking WAVES officer in Oregon. With the group of WAVES at the opening will be Ensign Elizabeth Hill of Portland, Ensign Barbara Sadler of Boise, Idaho, Petty Officer Dorothy Mor- rin and Petty Officer Joan Obi- dine of Portland.' Mayor I. M. Doughton will formally open the new office, as sisted by civic leaders and cham ber of commerce representatives. Participating will be leaders in . club activities fcere, including Mrs. George j R. K. Moorhead, president of the Oregon Federa tion of Women's Clubs, which Is sponsoring a state-wide WAVES recruiting activity; Mrs. R u t h Lear, president of the Salem Woman's club; and .Mrs. Delbert Schwabbauer. president of the Salem Junior Woman's club. "The navy's need fbr WAVES . to replace trained men to help man the ships of the fleet has made necessary Increased activi ty throughout the nation," Spe cialist Friesen said. "Salem has an outstanding rec ord for WAVES enlistments with many of our finest young women now actually handling navy jobs formerly , handled by men. The territory of the navy sta tion includes Marion and Polk counties and parts of Yamhill and Clackamas counties. FDR's Broncliitia ; Qearing Up, Sayp Admiral Mclntire WASHINGTON. March. SO -vD The White House said today that President Roosevelt's bronchitis was "clearing lip nicely." ' Vice Admiral Ross T. Mclntire, the president's physician, said he would complete a report tomorrow or Saturday on a physical exam ination of the chief executive. The checkup was completed Tuesday but . Mclntire said It took gome time to analyze the results. Until the irritation of Mr. Roose velt's bronchial tubes has been cleared up, Mclntire has ordered the president to ease up and, again today, the president had no ap pointments. Several long stand- ling engagements were cancelled.
