L This - week will see the new gymnasium virtually (completed. Five local men have been on the Job part of the time' for two or three weeks. Total cost of lattor and material will be about $1030, It is stated. Because of pending draft legis lation, meetings of the Linn coun ty selective service board have .been suspended for some time, by request of superior officers in the service, it was stated in Scio this week by R. R. Borovicka, , Scio, chairman of the county board, f Plans were completed Wednes day night at the meeting of the Scio unit of the Oregon state guard for the bivouac next Satur day and Sunday in the vicinity of Suttle lake in the Cascade moun tains east of Scio. About eight or nine members of the local com pany plan to make the trip, ac cording to Capt M. D. Zander, who has headed the local organi zation since its formation more i than a year ago. Members will take sleeping bags. Semi-annual district convention ot the Linn-Benton county Odd Fellows : association is scheduled for late October, according to' plans laid following the April meeting. Legion Wives Take Interest In Child Care . . S1LVERTON Child ' welfare will take-the form of moral as sistance as well as the material needs this year in the local aux iliary of the American Legion of which Mrs. 7. M. Powell is presi dent. Material assistance will not be so' necessary this year, it was believed, in view of the-larger salaries, as it was. during the de- pression, but, said Mrs . Powell Thursday, moral assistance may be needed more. J . In keeping with, this division- of the program, the Monday night meeting will be devoted to edu- cational matters, with Mrs. F. J. Roubal, high school teacher of so cial problems, speaking on "So cial Problems of Youth and' Rob ert Miller, high school instructor of civics, talking on "The Consti tution. Mrs. C J. Towe and Mrs. John - Demas - are the program chairmen. Mrs. J. E. Stoy will also be , present at the Monday night meeting to ask for 11- assistants for the blood donation at Silver- ton on October 7. Hours will be from 9 ajn. until 1 o'clock. Mrs. Stoy is captain of the local Red Cross motor corps, who is assist - : ing in making arrangements.: Dr. P. A. Lobar -is chairman of this division of the Red Cross. . Harvest Worker Redeems Suit - From Police Court - SILVERTON An "extra suit . of clothing is better worn than . lying in the police station, accord ing to both local officers and Charles McCanneL but Mr. Mc Cannel's suit has been resting in . the station for about a week. McCannel was apprehended by Special Officer Lewis Yates and ' charged with drunkenness as well as .wearing insufficient clothing. The fine was placed at $10 and a monuvs . jau sentence, Tne . sen- tence was suspended on condition that McCannel pay the fine. In lieu of the cash, McCannel put up a suit of clothing. It was not until Thursday of this week that he re deemed, it by paying the $10 fine . and an additional $2.50 cost w charge.- .. McCannel came here several days ago- from Gresham to assist in harvest work. JIrs. Legard Better . .. SILVERTON Mrs. A. O. Le gard, 92, confined at the Silverton hospital for the past ten days with a broken wrist and collar .bone, Is reported as improving. Pomeroy was seriously Injured Wednes day when he was thrown ante the paved . highway from the back ef a track . la which he wu riding while moving his household roods to Salem.' He was dragged for some distance and at the time the track was hit by a logging- truck. Last reports were that he Is restlnx weli in a Salem hospital. The family has lived la this com munity far the last IS years. Reports were made on the recent bond sales campaign and plans were discussed for the erection of a servicemen's bulletin board. " Mr. and Mrs. Ben Wade have rented the old Albin Davis house on Paradise Road and are moving this week. The Wades recently lived in the Bethany district. Leonard Strobel and E. K. Bur ton were among the deer hunters in the hills east of Silverton Fri day, i: " Russell Luckey and Miles To bias left Wednesday night for east ern Oregon for a deer hunting trip. The Willard McCannons have purchased the Mae Elliott home, known as the Grant Davis place on West Main street.' Mrs. Raymond Reed is spending several days at the home of her grandmother, Mrs; Anna K. Jen sen Mrs. Reed is the former Miss Vivian Buness and has been on the. east coast recently with her husband, who is in the navy. She makes her headquarters at Seat tle, where her mother, Mrs. Ma rie Jensen Buness is employed. Silverton's city council, headed by Mayor Reber Allen, wfll hold its regular meeting Monday night. Problems for. discussion have not been announced. Miss Nellie Ca vender Is employ ed at the Olsen pharmacy. Borovicka Reaps 24 Tons Barley From 18 Acres SCIO Twenty-four tons of threshed barley from 18 acres of valley land comprised the crop harvested from the field this sea son on the- R. R. Borovicka farm a few miles 'southeast of Scio, he stated here Wednesday. - i Borovicka specializes in prize- winning, turkeys and high-bred HoUtetn dairy cattle. Ground bar ley and other grains grown on the farm, together with local commer cial poultry and dairy feeds, are used in . great quantities on the Borovicka farm. Sweepstakes at many turkey exhibits have been awarded Bo rovicka's birds and strong, de mands for his products have pre vailed for years, not only in many sections of Oregon but in other and distant states as well. High water last winter made devastating, inroads in his fields and much labor, money and ma terial have been and are being expended in making repairs in preparation for another wet win ter. In the absence of adequate farm help, Mrs. Borovicka has done some of the farm work. Simmons is president in charge and Miss Bertha Skel ton, secretary. : Silverton Cannery Adds Equipment SILVERTON With canning at the local community cannery av eraging 5000 cans a week for the past week, Leonard Hudson, who Is in charge of the plant, reports that he believes Silverton people, at least, wfll be able to eat this winter. Canning will continue un til about November 15, Mr. Hud son believed this . week. Canning of corn has been falling off the past few days while canning, of tomatoes continues strong. Next week, carrots and beets, as well as meats, salmon and poultry will be - canned. However, appoint ments must be made lor the meat canning, before it has. been killed or it must be stored - in the: lock ers until canning- can be done. . During the past week two new hot plates, another steam kettle cooker and a retort, have been added. ,; V?; E. O.
