Bails and utilities easily were leaders at the start, with 1000 to 9000-share blocks appearing in these groups. Bidding eventually switched to industrial specialties, In eluding liquor, amusements and chemicals. While scattered losers were in sight at the closemodest c. advances were well in the ma jority. ; , ; The transportation section wav ered when Southern Pacific di rectors took no action on . a divi dend at their meeting today but steadied before the finish. The power and light division lost i sizable portion of morning 1m provement Steels, motors and coppers generally were without a great deal of vigor. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks finished with a net. gain of .4 of a point at 48.4. It was a broader market than that of Wednesday, 924 individual issues being traded. April. llWPV-Ner- vousness over the possibility of a ceiling on cotton, which some traders thought might be issued ! overnight," brought selling! Into the grain pits near the close Thursday and prices cracked sharply within a few minutes. ? f Wheat closed -l cents lower. May $1.42 July 11.41 28-corn was unchanged at ceilings, May $1.01, oats dropped and rye was off 74-1 . Wheat was linked with cotton in Washington dispatches shortly after President Roosevelt's "hold- Jhe-line" anti-inflation order as one of the farm products which would go under ceilings. Increa sing talk of a cotton maximum, therefore, caused uneasiness among holders of bread cereal contracts. The OPA said no ceiling would be set on cotton while the market was in session, leaving the way open lor such action after the close. Grain men felt that ceilinirs would be placed on wheat under parity levels, and they pointed out that hard wheat still is sell ing below parity. Other depression influences on wheat included reports that the demand for flour is small and that favorable weather conditions prevailed for the winter wheat crop. Hits FDR Plan F John 1 Lewis (above) frowned as he made his point at a press conference In New York that mine, railroad and farm work ers were "aimed at by Presi dent Roosevelt's "hold the line" order to curb inflationary ten dencies in the nation's economic life.
