April 8. 1913 Market Weak Underselling; Gold,' Copper Issues Rise in Final Hour; Rails Get Setback ' NEW YORK, April 7 VPy- The rtocfc; market wavered Wednesday tinder another substantial run of profit-taking sales. - While final prices for some leaders ; were up from the lows, , the listr showed many closing losses of a point or more. v Gold and copper issues moved ahead briskly in the final hour without lending buoyance to other groups. Buying of: the' golds was associated with disclosure of the treasury's plans for post-war cur rency stabilization. Dealings totaled 2,099,582 shares compared with 2,463,900 yester day. Rails suffered a sharps setback , in the early dealings with losses running to 2 points. Steels had a mild comeback. Anaconda, K e rin e c o 1 1 , and Phelps Dodge added fractions and Dome and Homestake were up about a point each. The Associated Press 60-stock composite was down .4 of a poin at 49.4. Yesterday's closing aver age was the highest recorded since May 9, 1940. Northwest Steel Plant Proposed WASHINGTON, April 1-iJPf-War production board officials Wednesday received a proposa for priorities on materials needed to build a steel plant in the Paci fie northwest. George E. Murphy, of Portland, Ore., head of the Portland Spar company, made the proposal. He was accompanied by H. A. Bras serC steel plant designer. If the WPB will release 15,000 tons of construction steel and nec essary machinery. MurDhv said in a statement, the plant could be in operation in record time in less than a year. He said the plans . call for an integrated plant which will produce in excess of 500,000 tons of various types of steel an nually. The plan contemplates use of Bonneville power and Pacific northwest mineral resources. .He said an engineering report showed that Oregon and Washington have ample deposits of iron ores which are especially suitable for war vital high grade alloys. ! Jury Acquits Toledo Man TOLEDO, April iMJPf-A cir cuit court jury late Wednesday acquitted Eb'ga Woody, 65-year-old Cougar Mountain bachelor, of a first degree murder charge stemming from the fatal shooting of a neighbor, Charles Phillips. The jury deliberated only three hours after . one of the shortest murder trials , in Lincoln county History. The trial opened Tues day. ; , Woody testified that Phillips had threatened to kill Guy Gris wold, Newpedt city marshalL and Wes Horner, a neighbor. Woody said he tried to talk Phillips out of it and that, Phillips then at tacked him with a knife. ; He knocked Phillips down with a rifle. Woody testified, but Phil lips then grabbed an axe and came at him again. Woody said he knocked Phillips out of the bouse and then felled him with a shotgun blast' when he returned to the attack. Council to Seek Referendum on State Wine Bill PORTLAND, April 7-jp)-The Oregon wine council " announced Wednesday it will seek a refer endum vote on the bill passed by the state legislature which would permit wines containing more than 14 per cent alcohol to be sold only in state liquor stores after Jan. 1, 1944. : Secretary-Manager Ralph Sta le- said he will ask for a petition title at Salem Thursday., petitions containing, 408 names of register ed voters must be filed with the secretary of state by June S to put the measure on the November election ballots. ; . :, The council is composed of 20 bottlers and general wholesalers and the Hood- River distilleries. Staley said the council opposes the Burke bill because" it would place the state further in busi ness at the expense of private in dustry.
