Miller who will observe their golden wedding anniversary at their home this afternoon from 2 to 5 o'clock. The Millers have been resident of Oregon for the past 35 years. (Kennell Family ' Bookshelf By the Library Staff The most recent volumes is sued in the now famous Amer ican guide series, is "Washing ton." Our sister state to the north has undergone an exhaustive in vestigation into her history, re sources and natural beauty, and the findings of the investigator, the Federal Writers Project, are here set down in word and pic ture in a most attractive and use ful manner. Because Washing ton's history is tied up closely with Oregon's, and because we are good neighbors, we should know more about the Evergreen state. Incidentally, this book about Washington was publish ed and printed by a Portland firm Another book which deals at least in part with the northwest has just been issued. It Is "Mur der Out Yonder," by Stewart H. Holbrook, and its subject mat ter is not history or description, but a study of certain crimes in a dozen different back country sections of the United States; two chapters tell of extraordinary murder cases in Oregon of by gone years, one of which is the story of Joshua II, of Oregon. The same insight into the past of American life is evident in this book as the luthoV displayed in his account of northwest lumber ing in "Holy Old Mackinaw." Speaking of b o e k s on the northwest, there is Richard Montgomery's new book "Young Northwest," which has been written especially for the high school age group of readers, yet all readers seeking information of a reliable nature, written in an informal manner, will do well to read this history of our great northwest. The author is the manager of the J. K. Gill com pany in Portland, and is well known for his book reviewing on the radio, and his previous books about the northwest. A new book that all readers of "Days of Our Years" by Pierre Van Paassen will want to read is "That Day Alone." Contem porary history, philosophic ob servations, and just good report ing, are the sum and substance of this author's work. He has been very near the center of much of today's 'war activity and his analysis of events and people is intelligent and clear.
