It was presumed the Kearny opened lire un der President Roosevelt's "shoot first" order but the Navy Depart ment had no farther details on the incident first in which an Ameri can warship has been struck since World War II began. Thomas was hitch-hiking and was invited to ride in Smith's automobile. Three Hurt In Series of Road Mishaps -.. .. .
