Although scattered issues finished under their tops, many favorites closed at or near best levels. The jprincipal fly in the recov ery ointment was the continued sluggishness of dealings. Transfers for thf five hours totalled 451, 630 shares compared with 465,430 yesterday when the direction was downward. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks, however, held a net gain of .8 of a point at i 40.7. It was the largest climb in this composite for any. day since . November 7. Helping the right-about, brokers said, were reports from Washing - ton dongress was considering some Iterations of the tax laws as a means of easing the burden of exejess profits levies for cor porations. In addition, a little more notice was taken of the op i timistic business picture and the ) opinions of defense authorities . that the labor situation was well In hand. . CAMP WX DCAfc HAUtO- y VIA m WB SCO TDCAV--, A Jf 1 r i x Wheat Prices Advance CHICAGO, Feb. 20-i'P)-Chalk-ing up gains of a cent or more In some cases, wheat prices ex tended the recovery that has been under way the past three sessions to about 3 cents from the five months' lows established Monday. T The upturn was based largely on strength of securities, reports of crop damage in the southwest and scattered mill demand. Buy ing of previous short j sellers to stop losses on the price rise added to the market's support. Wheat closed at the 'best level of the day, - cent higher than yesterday, May " Wa-V July 76-75. Some traders expressed belief mill demand may have been ac celerated as a result of the mar ket's reversal of its recent down ward jtrend but there was no con firmation of any large soale busi ness. Other officers included L. y 1 e Hammack, Portland, vice presi dent: F F. Big ler, ML Angel, Percy Murray, Klamath Falls, and Reed Ferris, Tillamook. Peter Reich, Portland, butter- maker for the Dairy Cooperative association, won the Oregon grand champion buttermakers trophy for the second consecutive year on the basis of average scores in cold storage and fresh butter con tests. The convention, which closed with a banquet for 275 persons at Oregon State college, approved an appropriation of 125,000 to continue state enforcement of the cream grading law and asked re instatement at the state fair of dairy products contests dropped last year. A committee was authorized to confer with other dairy groups and work out a new policy for handling the college creamery, probably permitting commercial operation to provide additional funds for research and instruction The associations resolution pointed out that it would be bet ter for the industry if the col lege plant could make money needed for research which would not be available from tax sources A resolution also was passed thanking the state board of higher education for temporary improve ments in the college creamery but asking that the next building planned be a new dairy products laboratory.
