Inexpensive House Is Trim Minimum Shelter, Future Additions Provided for in Design The "Home-land program" of the western building industry Is now under full said, according 10 Western Homes foundation. De mand for more of the lowest-cost home designs developed in the program last summer has been so strong that a new series of eight homes which families in the $500 to $1200 per year income group can afford to build has been launched. Second of this series is the "Fircof design, selected from National Plan service's "Practical Farm Building." The Flrcot desisrn was created by agricultural engineers to meet the needs of farm families having to build minimum shelter at mini mum first cost, and desiring to provide for later additions and im provements. Floor plan A is not onlv an economy-plus design but has features of homey charm and livabilitv. Note the windows of the living room, both for light value and for exterior appearance. The kitchen is arranged for good ngnt, venti lation, and convenience. The large passage to the living room makes for simple use of the latter for serving meals, and also provides for the circulation of- heat from the kitchen range. The center partition serves as a structural element that carries support of the roof directly to the foundation girder and posts. The design per mits an addition of bedroom ana bath alternate plan B at the least possible trouble and expense. Nebraskan Visits At Pleasantdale PLEASANTDALE Thursday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph G. Hadley were Charles Van Osdol of Beatrice, Neb., Mr. and Mrs. Harry Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Mack Van Osdol of Portland, Mrs. George La Flemme of Newberg, Mrs. E. Alphonso of Dayton. Mrs. E. Alphonso is aunt of the two Van Osdol men and Mrs. Walker and Mrs. La Flemme and she is mother of the hostess. It had been more than. 65 years since Charles had seen Mrs. Had ley and her mother. He Is a re tired jail road conductor and served in the Spanish-American war. From here he went to Salem to visit relatives. He will return home about November 1. With the help of the faculty and the lettermen the sophomores gave a very successful party. The first part of the evening the group enjoyed games in charge of Maxine Stephens, Virginia Bruce, Jack Costelow, Lawrence Rehfeld and Al Bursell. Later the re freshment committee headed by Blanche Pilcher and Ruth Over holser served refreshments. Several alumni attended the party, among them Anita Gilmour, Lois Gilmour, Bob Terhune and Fulton Pennick. Other guests were Del'bert Smith, Leroy Davis, Bill Mills. Gordon DeWall, Miss Doris Height, Ray and Al Shlnn and Harold Cochran. Twelve dollars a month has been allowed the Jefferson high school for NYA work. This will pay three or four students for labor done at the school. NYA work in the past has included such jobs as either office or janitor work. Class pictures were taken of both the grade and high school students on Monday and Tuesday of this week by L. Lutz of Salem The north grade school entrance was used as a background. Former Residents Visit Goverdale CLOVE RALE Mrs. Frank Cook of West Fir, and formerly of this community, is here this week visiting friends and relatives. The Four Leaf Clover club will hold an all-day meeting at the home of Mrs. Walter Miller Wed nesday, October 18. speaker will be Art Klrkham of KOIN radio station of Portland. The subject of his address will be The Contribution of Social and Educational Agencies to Demo cratic Citizenship." A business meeting will follow at which time the new president. Mrs. V. M. LaDue, will take her new office. Other officers of the Council Accepts Budget, Jefferson JEFFERSON Report of the budget committee was accepted at meeting of the city council Wednesday night. Regular meet lng of the council was adjourned Monday night because a quorum was not present. The finance committee report ed retiring $500 of warrants on October 1. The treasurer report ed cash on hand amounting to $770.98. Permits were granted C. J. Thurston and Ed Ricks for build ing additions and to Lloyd Bil- yeu to remove an old shed on the city property. Celebrate National Washer & Ironer Week October 15th to 21st Old Witness Tree, Prairie Landmark, Is Chopped Down SCOTTS MILLS The big tree which stood all alone on Crooked Finger prairie and which was called by Indians 'the witness tree" is down. Measuring about 80 feet In circumference, the tree had stood as a well-known landmark on the prairie. Joe Mitchell, now living near Grants Pass, was recently able by the tree to locate his old home site which he had left in 1860 when 7 years old. The tree was damaged when the Hettwere house burned last January and it was decided it should come down as it endan gered buildings around it Charles McCown, an Indian who died many years ago, Joe Mitchell and many other old timers always contended that old Chief Crooked Finger and three of his children were bu ried near the big tree. 4H Health Group Choses Officers HAZEL GREEN A 4H health club was organized with 29 mem bers. The officers are president, June Johnson; vice president, Lois Wacken ; secretary, Geral dlne Wolf; leader, Mrs. Ross Miles. Mrs. Herman Wacken, jr., and mother, Mrs. D. E. R. Walker, will be hostesses to the Sunshine sew lng club at Mrs. Wacken's home Wednesday, October 18, at 2 o'clock.
