Calvary Baptists Will Add Features Sunday will mark the beginning of added features to the schedule of services conducted in the Cal vary Baptist church urraer the di rection of the pastor Rev. Arno Q. Weniger. These features are in stituted with the hope of encour aging the whole family to attend the Sunday night service of wor ship. Commencing at B o'clock the youth of the church will assemble to hear plans for the organization of a choral club under the lead ership of Mr. P. W. Lehmann. Light refreshments will then be served at six o'clock to all the young people. At 6:15 two ser vices will be held for and by the young people. At the same time the adults will meet in two classes for the study of "Evangelism and What Baptists Believe" taught by Rev. F. C. Stannard and Mrs. F. W. Lehmann- These classes will run for nine weeks through Octo ber and November. The evening worship follows at 7:30 p.m. with the pastor speak ing on the subject, "If Christ Should Not Return What?" Mrs, Charles Davis will be heard in i gospel solo with Miss Doris Schunke at the Howard Emerson memorial organ. At the morning worship the or dinance of baptism will be admin istered to a number before the pastor's message on the subject, "The Ministry of Suffering." Fol lowing the sermon the ordinance of communion will be observed and the reception of new mem bers will take place. The choir under the direction of Mr. E. D. Judge Rossman Points to (Good Business" Angle Eclipsing Charity "Appeal ot the community chest isn't an appeal to charity, but should come aa sense of duty," said Judge George Rossman, asso ciate Justice of the state supreme court, addressing the Salem Real ty board yesterday noon , at the Golden Pheasant. v Judge Rossman said he had first-hand opportunity, to study humanity in the rough as a muni cipal judge in Portland Z3 years ago, and that he knew that many of the people who will benefit by the chest funds lack only a spirit of acquisitiveness. - Chest "Good Business" He pointed out that from CO to 70 per cent of chest funds will go to children, through the various youth organizations such as the Boy Scouts, YMCA, YWCA. Cath olic youth organizations, etc. The other 30 to 40 per cent, he said, will go largely to Hotel de Minto, the Salvation Army and other such organizations intended for the as sistance of needy adults. Stating that "every community can have just as many paupers as it wants,'' Judge Rossman said it comes under the heading of "good business" to support the commun ity chest in Salem and thus keep pauperism at a minimum. Letters Pour in With Tax Checks Second Half State Income Assessments Are Due . Monday, October 2 More than 2000 letters, con taining checks covering the second half payments of state income tax for the year 1939, were received at the offices ot the state tax com mission here Friday. The deadline for second half payments has been fixed for Mon day, October 2. Penalty and in terest will accrue against Income taxes not paid until after that date. First half payments were due April 1. Tax officials estimated the second half payments at approxi mately $1,200,000, with a total of (4,800,000 for the year.
