Her booking agent says she - cannot get a Job evca as bat-chock . girl in tho city. However, he offers her a spot at the Clnb Caribbean in Miami, on condition that she get there Monday. Ginger jumps at tho ' opportunity. Now the question is: ' Where can she raise the needed travel expenses? CHAPTER 11 ' Abysmally depressed. Ginger gravitated toward Bryant Park, ' where at length she found a bench. Oblivious to the admiring impact of cruising masculine stares, she tried to think a way out of her predica ment, but with little success. It looked as if O'ROey was right about . her career, if she could not get to Miami. She would have to take any : kind of Job at all, soon, simply to be able to eat Her spirits ssnk per ceptibly lower at the thought. A man sitting on the other end of the bench, who had hitherto been absorbed in an evening paper, put it down on the seat between them, and walked off. Ginger picked it up. She might Just as well bo finding that Job now as later.' . ; She glanced idly at page one first, from force of habit rather than in terest.' Kings might abdicate, floods In China kill millions, tragedy its Ik ' the air lanes, even movie stars shoot their husbands; these abstractions were of little moment beside the reality of a setback In her career and the persecution of a crooner , , scorned. .A The headline streamered blackly cross the front page: . "BoNKHct Diamond Stoixn In BaoAD Datucht" 1 Ginger scanned the sub-headlines beneath, not because she was par ! tieularly interested, at the moment, bat because, being American, she did not want to miss anything. ' The famous Bonkheer Diamond, one of the largest uncut diamonds in the world, which, recently diseov. . ered. had been brought to New York .in the hope of selling it to some , multi-millionaire, had been stolen that afternoon from the case in which It was on exhibition In ths - Fifth Avenue shop of one of the ". metropolis's most prominent Jewel : era. It was a purs whits stone, Gin . ger gathered, and worth a quarter of a million dollars. Her skimming ' eyes caught phrases: "International : ring of Jewel thieves suspected," i "police dragnet out," "moot brazen ' Jewel theft of the century." r Ginger shrugged her sboulders, as , she Impatiently began to turn the 1 pages, looking for the classified ad- vertisement section. She would give .all the diamonds In the world, at . the moment, for the price ox a bos - fare to Miami. Miller, federal pathol ogist at Oregon State college, in charge of walnut disease control research. It has been thoroughly demon strated that Bordeaux mixture spray will control blight but it has the .disadvantage of some times causing some foliage burn and it apparently causes the trees to use somewhat moi water than otherwise would be needed. The tests with copper oxylate have been carried on since 1935 with Increasing evidence of more satisfactory results than are ob tained with Bordeaux. The copper oxylate has reduced the blight in fection more than Bordeaux and as yet has shown no damage to foliage. Copper oxylate used at the rate of three to four pounds to 100 gallons of water has been more effective under western Oregon conditions than Bordeaux at the strength of 4-4-100, but at present retail prices it is more expensive. Dr. Miller is net yet ready to recommend the use of copper oxylate in place of Bordeaux, but some growers who have seen the results first-hand are spraying from one-third to all of their or chards with this material on their own responsibility. She still lacked about eleven dollars with which to Join this hare-expense ex pedition to the immediate land of her dreams. Ginger expelled her breath in a long sigh, then caught it again as she clutched at her wrist watch. Less than half an hour be fore the pawnbroker had offered her ten dollars for it. Perhaps she could talk him into adding another dollar; in any event, she could always scrape that much together.
