OX Increase in Year The communicable disease re port for December from the Mar lon county department or health office shows a gain in some dis eases as compared a year ago and a decrease In others. For 1938 there were 158 eases of chicken- pox and only 19 in 1937. Influ enza decreased with 114 cases In 1938 and 00 in 1937. Mumps in creased with 60 cases this year as compared to 25 a year ago. In 1938 there were 107 cases of scar let fever and only 53 in 1937. The tuberculosis cases dropped with only 34 as compared to 75 a year ago. The health department in co operation with the Marion county cental society nas compietea .aen tal examinations at Grant school. Two hundred and forty-five were examined and the children will go to their own dentists for cor rections. The dentists In chsrge ot the examinations were Dr. Claude Clifford, Dr. Frank Prime and Dr. George Lewis. Physical examinations were given at McKinley school Thursr day. Your Chief. JAY, Unemployment Act Backed by Labor Organised labor as represented by the State Federation of Labor wants to preserve unemployment compensation, D. E. Nickerson, executive secretary of the federa tion, declared in a formal state ment issued here Friday. Nickerson said his organiza tion did not want the Oregon un employment insurance act re pealed. Such action would leave employers of the state with a H.- OQO.OOO annual tax load and no returns in funds paid for unem ployment benefits, he declared. - i "What we want Is to protect all the rights of labor existing under the unemployment compensation act previous to November 8 when the bill to regulate picketing was adopted, Nickerson stated. Cr&f l r iL Duncan t Tells of Budget Problems Procuring Revenue to Pay 24 Millions Expenses Is Major Task The biggest problem confront ing the 1931 legislature is how to procure the revenue necessary to carry on the program submitted in the 334,000,000 budget of former Governor Charles H. Martin, de clared Robert Duncan, president ot the senate, in an informal talk before the Salem Ad club yester day. The senator from Burns, speak ing individually, said a way out of the dilemma lay through bal ancing the budget with antici pated revenue and putting before the people the option et a sales or gross income tax as the means ot providing funds for greatly in creased relief expenditures.- Dwelling on other aspecta of the tax problem, the senator showed how removal ot boards and bureaus as a means of effect ing administrative economies wss impossible because of pressure from minority groups.
