Relief Committee Selects Purbrick Staff Bookkeeper Former State Auditor; Rolls not Blnch Changed The llarion county relief com mittee appointed Norman B. Pur brick staff bookkeeper at its January meeting yesterday. Pur trick, recently employed In the eounty tax department, was for many years an auditor with the stats industrial accident commis sion. Direct relief and other aid rolls remained nearly stationary during December, the committee was advised by M. :. Rolcomb, county administrator. Total of active case in the program of aid to the blind, aged, depend ent children and unemployable increased only from 2979 to 2995 while the number ot appli cations pending Cropped from 614 December 1 to 525 on De cember 31. Four hundred fifty two new applications were re ceived during the month. Old Age Aid High County, state and federal ex penditures on the four programs aggregated S45.461.5l, of which 130,436.77 went for old age as sistance. $9834.24 for direct re lief, $4501 for aid to 270 de pendent children and $689.50 to 29 blind persons. The direct relief expenditure included $2099 in cash grants. $4875.49 in requisition, or store order, relief, $246 for burials, $1560.80 for hospitalization and $1052.95 for other" medical care. Solomon, substituted attorney for the Oregon Com monwealth Federation, filed a motion in circuit court yesterday for dismissal of the organiza tion's $109,000 libel action brought against George Putnam and the Capital Printing com pany last October. His action followed the filing of aa amend ed complaint by Roy Hewitt, originally the attorney in the ease, and of a notice of Solo mon's substitution. The federation based its claim on alleged falsity of news articles and editorials that accused it of haring ' communist connections snd direction. State Education Overhead Is Low .No small task is that of the state department of education in supervising the public schools of Oregon despite the fact Its bud get of $35,552.69 last year am ounted to but .17 per cent of the $20,590,263.24 spent in the state for educational purposes. Rex Putnam, superintendent ot public instruction, told the Salem Lions club yesterday. "Ours is one of the biggest state departments," Putnam said. "Over one-quarter of the popula tion of the state is under the Jur isdiction of our office. The de partment is responsible for super vision of the schooling facilities for that number ot people." The state has more than 1800 school districts with over 8500 school board members and 17,717 teachers, principals and superin tendents, Putnam added. , The superintendent said he ap preciated being the first demo crat ever elected to his office.
