C Gaines, Former Scio Residents, l Are Honored HUBBARD -Mr. and Mr. A. C Gaines, who were married October 21, 1888, in Scio, Linn county, obaerred their golden wedding an nirersary Sunday at the Odd Fel lows nail at Hubbard. They II red in Scio until 1906 wben they m o t ed to Portland where they hare since made their home. Mrs. Gaines Is a sister of J. N. Po in dexter or Hubbard. ; Both Mr. and Mrs. Gaines are native Oregonlans ot pioneer stock, their parents coming across the plains in 1852 and 1853. They hare three children, all of whom were present: W. E. Gaines, Haxel Akre and Forest Gaines, all of Portland. . Dinner was served at noon j to 100 relatives and friends. A large wedding cake decorated with sold leaves and gold colored flowers formed the centerpiece. Gold and yejlow flowers on the. tables and about . the spomg further carried out the golden wedding motif. Vows Renewed ' After dinner a short program was enjoyed. Rev. Geo. Suther land, an old friend of the family. oiiiciated at the ceremony as they renewed their vows. Frances Gaines, sister of the bride, was matron of honor. M. C. Gaines acted as best man for his cousin. Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Gaines cele brated their golden wedding anni versary in October, 1936. Among others present were Mr. ana Mrs. J. IN. Poindexter, Mr. and Mrs. Remus Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Barr of Hubbard, Mrs. Ina Buhite Stoddart and family, Jory Gaines, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Gaines and family, Mrs. Eva Davenport and family, Mr. and Mrs. 8. Hick cox and family, Mrs. Addie Poin dexter and family, all of Scio, Mr. and Mrs. Will May of Salem. Auto Demolished By Riders Unhurt PIONEER As Willis Keller and Gene Stalcup were coming home from Portland Friday their car turned over when it hit loose gravel while passing 'an other. Neither one ot the men were hurt but the car was . a wreck. Mr. and Mrs. Chester Gil liam or Bay City visited at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Bird over the week end. Gilliam is principal of the school there. June Schnider, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Keller, sr., was operated on for appendi citis Saturday. She Is getting along as well as could be ex pected. June formerly lived here with, her folks, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Schnider. Rally-day will be observed Sunday at the Hopewell United Brethren church and all friends axe invited. Church services will start at 10 a. m. Sunday school at 11 a. m. and a basket dinner, with a table program, will be served at 1 o'clock. Miss Pearl Stafford of Port land spoke Sunday at the Hope well United Brethren church on missions in the far east She formerly lived here. Czech Newcomer Has Runaway in Downtown Scio SCIO An unusual scene-1n Scio thlt week was a runaway team that demolished the light rig to which.it was. attached and resulted in an injury to one of the animal's ankles when the out fit came in contact with a parked truck at the Weseley grocery cor ner. The truck was not damaged. Frank Benes was driving the team, which bscame frightened and unmanageable about a half a mile south of the city-. The impact with . the . truck threw Benes from the rig, from which the .team became freed, the driven landing violently on the oiled street uninjured. He re tained bis grip on the lines and succeeded in stopping the horses near the wreck. Benes is a -newcomer from Czechoslovakia and i3 making his home with his broth er, Anton Benes on a small farm a short distance west of the city. Auburn Folks Return From Nevada City Trip AUBURN Mrs. Ben H. Haw kins and daughter, Eloise, and Merle Van Cleave have returned from a trip to California. Mi?s Jean Hawkins was visited at Ne vada City and other relatives in Turlock San Leandro, Kay ward, and Oakland. They viewed the China Clipper leaving the Ala meda airport and the Golden Gate park was Tisited, also th redwoods and the Oregon cares.
