Carl Porter Encounters Rain, Flood And Movie Stars While on Travels; Books Pictures for Early Showing Business, pleasure and more excitement than bargained for marked a recent Los Angeles and Hollywood business trip of Manager Carl A. Porter of the local Warner Brothers El sinore and Capitol theatres. With more than 30 other Warner Brothers theatre man agers, including Temj Olson of Aberdeen and a former Oregon boy. Johnnie Robinson, now man-o aging a theatre for Warners in the south. Mr. Porter was called to Los Angeles for a business con ference by Louis J. Halper, Pa cific coast tone manager, where the various managers I met with Mr.' Halper. and Carl J. Walker, district manager for the north west and central' California. Commenting on the! trip Por ter said: "I thought Ir had seen rain here in Salem, but these Oregon mists can't hold a buck et to the deluge that greeted ns When we arrived in Los Angeles last week." Porter further stat ed that, while business was some what hampered, by tto record breaking flood, a majority ot Callforalans took it in good spir it and business went on as usual wherever possible, t I . Highlights of the trip were dally tears through the famous Warner Brothers studio at Bur- bank. Three days were 'consumed In inspecting this ultra-modern motion picture plant. Everything on this "lot" is the last word in sound ; motion picture making from the smallest "mike to the Porter Hob-Nobs With Movie Stars ST largest camera 'boom." While on the "lot," Manager Porter was privileged to visit various sets of some of the ma jor productions now ia the mak- inr. On the first dar the aroun Visited the set where director Edmund . Fay Ba inter and Henry O'neill. which is due for an early sum' mer release. - On the second ris- it the managers were entertain ed by Kav Francis on the "Se crets of an Actress" set. Miss Francis"" Is the star of this pro duction and is supported by Ian Hunter and Gloria Dickson with WUUan Kelghley directing. Several other massive units were visited on ensuing days among which were the . sets ot "Robin Hood.'! "Jerebel." and ''Gold Diggers of 1931" starring Rudy Vallee and Hugh Herbert. While in Hollywood Manager Porter arranged for the early Salem presentation at the Elsi nore and Capitol of some of the biggest pictures ot the ensuing summer and fall months. I suppose, of "give the newcomer a chance." Converse ly, the tendency is to bear down on the seasoned writer, who has had his first flight and may now be expected to "take it." Higher, standards are set tor him;, he must not only lire np to his previous performance but do even hetter if he is to please. This systam may be all hunky-dory so far, as the writers and : reviewers are concerned, but it seems hardly fair te the cash customers, who don't par ticularly glye a hoot whether Ernest Hemmlngway's art is progressing but whether he baa written a good book and who are not bothered about Clifford Odets' reaction to the Hollywood Influence but would like to know If they should or should not anrrender six nlunks for two seats to "Golden Boy." People and Ideas To those potential play-goers, therefore, who may rhy away from "Wine of Choice" because word has come down from Sinai that S. N. Behrman's new com edy is Just like S.-N. Behrman's old comedies, let the message be added that "Wine ot Choice is also a good play.- Sure, it Is Tory much like Behrman's ojher plays. But why the similarity should disappoint those who professed to like "The Second Man," "Brief Moment" and "End nf Summer." mystifies me, found "Wine of Choice,"' as I did its Behrman predecessors. entertaining and beguiling. But within its limits Mr. Behr man bats bis people and ldeaa back and forth so skillfully and amusingly that, while it ia going on, one experiences the mental excitement expected from good drama. Afterward one may sus pect that what has happened on the stage Is not really drama at all and that what was said was really not very Interesting or Important but 88 per cent bush- wa and so what do these skep tical afterthoughts matter if the Illusion ot excitement and im portance was there at the time? I am tor Mr. Behrman and "Wine ot Choice," even though It be merely "civilized," as Mr. Mencken used to say. Incidentally, this is the play in which Miriam Hopkins start ed on the road, abandoning her part when the play was with drawn for revisions. Her suc cessor, Claudia Morgan, daugh ter of Ralph Morgan, has many of the Hopkins mannerisms and attributes and (a admirable on her own account, too. Alexand er Woollcott did not abandon his part. He plays, -In effect. Alexander Woollcott and gets hearty applause from everybody 1 High, Wide and Handsome Is Period Romance of old Pennsylvania ' A romance flavored by tbe music ' of Jerome Kern, set . In the colorful period of the mid dle 1800's In - Pennsylvania, is the theme of "High, Wide and : Handsome." which comes today to ' the Hollywood theatre. In "High, Wide n Hand some," Irene Dunne is a young and light-hearted carnival aing- er, while Randolph Scott is a forceful young Pennsylvania farmer who ' has begun' drilling for oil on his farm, making the first oil drill in the country. These two. from widely differ ent backgrounds, meet, fall in love, anjl marry. On their wed ding day. oil is discovered in Scott's well, and he plunges Into development of his find, find ing but little time for his new wife. Accustomed to an exciting and colorful life with the carnival. Miss Dunne soon finds her new existence a bore, and .her bus- band cruelly preoccupied and 1 1- different. Unable to reconcile herself to the dulling of the love to which she had dedicated her life, she runs oft after a . quarrel with Scott, an- joins an other carnival. Scott, in the meantime, has been waging a war against rail road interests which threaten the Independence of his group of oil drillers; and the huse in fluence and resources of his riv als have forced him into a po sition where his life is threat ened, as well as his business. ' Miss Dunne learns of her hus- band's danger, and rushes at once back to his arms. Confi dent that nothing can shake her love for Scott, she returns to him with aid. and is instrumen tal in winning his fight.
