About The Oregon statesman. (Salem, Or.) 1916-1980 | View Entire Issue (Dec. 21, 1937)
By RON 0 EMM ELL Don Coons, ex-Viking pigskin artist who had a while of a good year with the orange-clad gridders at Oregon State this year, arriTed in Salem Friday after finishing a tussle with the exams, preliminary to Christmas vacation. Bale and hearty, Don says he weighs . in at aroand 172 whkh Is prob ably the lightweight record of the roast for an end. They don't come much tougher, how ever, and Don was chosen on - several all-opponent teams. system. It is Don's personal belief that Oregon State will have an eren better ball club next fall than was fielded this, despite tbe loss of the phantom, Joe Gray, Full back Kolberg and Guards Watts and Ramsey. Coons says tnat &u ner expects to change his whole offenslye tactics next year, and will snort two ball-carriers in his harkflplrt instead of one. It is the nlan to use both . Alexander and ; Higgins in tbe backfield. Under this setuni. Jay Mercer will be moved to the J quarterback post vanned bv the rraduating Dun can. Mercer cavorted at right half this year. . . x )l ounce to Do Punting. t It is Stiner's intention, ac cording to Coons, to convert Younce into a fullback and use his kicking ability to do the punting. Den Ell is also avail able for the boomer spot, and will iprobably understudy Younce. Both pass-snatching Joe VTendllck and Coons1 will be back for their last year at the wing herths. Veteran Jim Orr should be , even better at his snapper-back post, Hacken bruck and Gillis will probably handle the tackles, and Schultz and Schell at the guards. O Needed Change. l Never could understand the football coaching principle that calls for, virtually, putting all the touchdowns intone basket. It said basket gets a kink in it, there ! ia a sudden halt to the touch downs. That has been one glar ing weakness with the Beavers' offensive for a good many years. One. lone ball packer to do all the packing, or, 90 per cent of it. What a beating that one feller takes. He's bound to get it sooner or later. Even Houdini couldn't have been in all tbe scrapes the " Stater's solo carrier has been every "season and come out un scathed. , " Slugging Bee Cleared. Don cleared up another lit tle matter that has been both ering ns no little ever since the l"CXA-OSC game 'way back on October 16, There; was,' per haps, more evident animosity? in that ball game than 'in any Coast conference tilt we've ever seen. It finally brokSe out, in the last quarter, in an open list fight between Hackenbruck and a Uclan that banished both from the field. It seems, ac. cording to Coons, that the TjOs Angeles huskies thought every pileup was a signal for an un dercover slugging bee and the Staters naturally resented such ungentlemanly tactics. - O Web foots Ruthless. Those high-scoring Webfoot hoopers continued their ruthless assault on enemy baskets last week when; they defeated Union Oil 66 to 32 and Southern Oregon Normal 72 to 43. In the five'frays played so far the Oregon five has amassed a total of 312 points, as against 161 scored by. opponents. Same figures to be better than 60 points per 40-minute period. The high-geared ones will he seen in action here December 28 against the Bearcats.
