The favorable dates for placing: the treatment In the Willamette valley are Aug ust 15 to September IS, according to County Agent Harry L. Riches. The damage to the tree Is done by the larval stage of the peach and prune root borer which is hatched from eggs laid by the adult, a clear-winged, wasp-like insect during the summer months. Paradlcblorobensine, when placed In the soil during warm dry weather when the soil tempera ture is about (0 degrees forms a heavier than air gas which nenetratea downward. The suc cess in killing this pest by using this gas depends largely upon me method and manner or placing the "Paradi" about the tree to prevent the escape of the gas formed fromit, says the county agent. Care must be used to dis tribute the crystals as evenly as possible, since the action of the gas is local. Use only pure para dichlorobenzine having the fine ness of granulated sugar, advises Mr. Riches. After the crystals are placed around the tree, cover them with 4 to 6 inches of soil and compact wlfh a sharp blow or two with the back of the shovel. This forms a mound which prevents the crystals from wash ing and serves as a container for the gas. Avoid pushing the crys tals against the tree trunk with the first shovelful of soil. ; Keep Away From Bark Trees of six years of age may be treated with U to ounces of "paradi" but the "paradi" must, be kept away from the bark of the tree. The first dirt placed about the trees should be drop ped directly downward to preyent the crystals from being pushed up against the bark. Because of the possibility of damage to the ten der bark of young trees., the mounds should be torn down after 30 days. They may be left about the older trees until the follow ing spring. Usually treatment every two or three years when thoroughly done will keep prune and peach orch ards reasonably free from root borers, says Mr. Riches. Examination of trees should be made at this time for presence of the borers, their presence being indicated by gum and small part icles of wood on the trunks or at the ground line and underneath the soil to a depth of four or five inches. Often times large trees may be found to girdled. This is a serious Injury to trees when such damage occurs. A copy -of station circular No. 109 entitled "Control of the West ern Peach and Prune Root Borer" may be had by calling at the county agent's office in the post office building. Get Word of Birth SILVERTON Local friends are receiving announcements of the Jefferson Enjoys Big Celebration JEFFERSON -The Fun Festi val sponsored by the Jefferson Better Business club Saturday afternoon and evening on the main street drew a large crowd of local people and from sur rounding communities gathered on the street to enjoy the fun. First on the pro'gram was the pet parade and anything on wheels. Following the parade, merchandise prizes were award ed in a variety of races. The last number; on the after noon program was' the water fight, between two teams, with three men on each team, cap tained by Elmer Redmond and Bill Thurston. Redmond's team won, and members on the team each received a dress shirt. The evening " program began with a community sing, led by Dr. J. O. Van Winkle. Following the community sing, the Jeffer son band consisting of 15 mem bers, and several members - of the lbany high school band, gave the Albany high school band, gave magic show completed the entertainment. Ex-Scotts Mills Folk Avert Death SCOTTS MILLS j Word has been received here 'that Mrs. Av erett Dunagan has been taken home from the hospital where she was brought after suffering ser ious injuries in an automobile col lision ten days ago at Kelso, Wash. Both Mr. and Mrs. Dunagan were rendered unconscious and Mrs. Dunagan did not regain her fac ulties for some time. The car was demolished. They now reside at birth of a son, George Charles, to Mr. and Mrs. George Beebe of Portland, Saturday, Aug. 6. Ferris Dodd of the Assembly of God officiat ing.. Burial will be In the Masonic cemetery. . Mr. ' Huddleston was born at Maynardsville, Tenn., August 18, 1875. He lost his mother when a child and with his father moved to St- Louis where he spent most of his life. He was , married , to Lnlle Cary who with one son, Roy Huddleston, survives him. . He was a graduate of a Ten ne.4ee high school and learned the machinists trade, becoming a master mechanle. In April, 1898, he enlisted In Company A, third regiment volunteer Infantry of Missouri and served until he was mustered out with an honorable discharge. His health has failed the past few years and with his family he has made a number of trips to Oregon to the home of his aunt, Mrs. S. O. Wallace, last member of his mother's family. In 1936 they came to stay. As he became helpless he was moved to the hospital. Besides his widow and son, he is survived by a half brother, John Huddleston of Tennessee, an aunt, Mrs. S. O. Wallace of Lebanon, and other distant relatives. 9 "... . Barber, who received word Wednesday morning of the birth of twins to her granddaughter, Mrs. Keith Jenkins at Tillamook, is actually 81 in years but much younger in activity and appear ance. The twins are not Mrs. Bar ber's first experience as a great grandmother. It is her fourth.
