The OREGON STATESMAN, Salem, Oregon, Friday Morning, June 4, 1937 PAGE SEVENTEEN J L Farmer Interests C & Joining new Co-op Lafky Reports Leaders of Other States Taking Interest in Move Virtually all farmer cooperaUre organizations in the state hare requested copies of the Farmers' Crop Protectee Co-op recently organized here as a farmers' col lectire bargaining agency, and among, the latest Marion county groups to Join the morement are the Willamette Cherry Growers' co-op and the Mt. Angel co-op creamery. Herman Lafky an nounced yesterday. The new protectee co-op was ratified by the Farmers Union convention last week end is ex pected to be one of the major r items before the state grange con Sk Tentlon at La Grande next week. At the rate farm groups are Joining. Lafky, one of the origina tors of the plan, believes it will not be long before a majority of the farm Interests of the state will be affiliated with it. Ile reports requests about the movefrom farm leaders in Wash ington and California and says National President Everson of the Farmers Union and Farmer Union President Garrod of California, at the Oregon convention, express ed enthusiasm for the plan and Indicated their intentions to pro mote a similar move in other states. L. . - v ?i-t f 4" L Typical Tibetan priest t- j Baby lam Job Insurance Is Upheld in Opinion Constitutionality of th Ore gon unemployment compensation insurance law was upheld in an opinion handed down by Circuit Judge G. F. Skipworth of Lane county Wednesday night. Copies of the opinion were received In Salem Thursday. The opinion was written la a suit brought by the Pinnacle Packing company ' and others of Jackson county seeking to. re strain the unemployment compen sation insurance commission from collecting fees under the Oregon act. Plaintiffs contended there were engaged In agricultural pur suits and were exempt from op eration of the law. - In a previous opinion Judge Skipworth held that the Pinna cle Packing company and other parties to the suit were subject to payment of the Insurance fee. This opinion followed arguments on the injunction phase of the suit last September. Judge Skip worth refused to grant the . in junction. Judge Skipworth said he based his latest opinion largely upon the recent ruling of the United States supreme court in the Ala bama suit attacking the constitu tionality of the unemployment compensation Insurance act In operation in that state. ' Cherrian Concert On Radio Tonight ' Salem's bow to the Portland rose festival- will be made to night over KOIN under the aus pices of the Cherrians. The per iod is from 8:15 to 8:45. The Willamette Songmen directed by Cameron Marshall will give sev eral numbers; and Senator Doug las McKay will speak in the in tervals between songs. . ' Work on the Salem float for the festival Is reported as pro gressing satisfactorily, with every assurance, that the city will have a fine float as its entry In the pa rade. Rose festival buttons will be on sale In booths about town in a few days. They admit wearers to the stadium. A special train will leave Sa lem at 7 o'clock the morning of June 11, which is the day of the big parade. Rickey Has Five In Graduate List RICKEY, June f. Those graduating from Salem high school this year from this com munity are Gladys Crabb, Frances Flood. Hazel Dell Sheridan, Hazel Magee and Frank Gosser. Of this group.' all but Frank Gosser graduated the -same year from Rtckey and Gladys, Hazel Dell and Hazel have been class mates since - they were in the first grade at Rickey. ; Hazel Dell and ; Gladys both have office positions with Salem firms awaiting them when they graduate. Frances plans to enter nurses' training. Hazel Magee will enter Willamette this fall and Frank, who is vice-president of the community club, will secure a position for. the present. . B. P. Herigstad Is Called by Death : - . f , ,'v-v SILVERTON, June 3 P. Herigstad, who has been a Sil verton tailor for many years, died at Salem- hospital Thursday morn ing and was brought to Silvertoa for funeral arrangements bs charge of Ekman's. Herigstad was born in Norwiy, January 6, 1868.- He came toto states In 1893. Four years later he was married to Anna -Marie Njaa, who survives. Sarah Galbraith Dies in Portland SILVERTON. June 3 Sarah A. Galbraith, 76, died Thursday morning at a Portland hospital. Mrs. Galbraith was recently is jured on the streets of portlaad when a group of children, play ing tag knocked her down. Sbe sustained a broken hip and a broken leg. Mrs. Galbraith was brought to Silverton J for funeral arrange ments in charge of Ekman. Survivors Include the follow ing ebifdren Cornelia Galbraith of Santa Cruz, Cal., ' Gertrude Shorey of Hillsboro; Ethel :Boc of Silverton; Julia Cowels and Clive H. Galbraith of Livingston, Montana, "and Huxlay of Los Ga tos. Cal. The late Mr. Galbraith edited a newspaper in southern Oregon some years ago. v. Search continues in far-off Tibet for a new Dalai lama to succeed the temporal and religious sov ereign who died in December of 1933. Religious tradition in this country on "the roof of the world" stipulates that the spirit of the deceased ruler is transferred to some new-born infant. When this baby child is found, he is adopted by the priests and trained for his. high office. Several "candidates' have been brought forward, but the question has not as yet been settled satisfactorily. S t i - Letters Support Galloway, Fisher A number of letters were re ceived) Thursday at the executive department urging Governor Charles H. Martin to vote for the retention of Charles V. Galloway and Earl Fisher ! as members of the state tax crommission. Their terms expire tomorrow.
