Oats Market Breaks A sharp break in the Chicago oats market formed an I unsettling factor concerning wheat and other grains at this stage. Hery selling of a stop loss character that de veloped plunged the May oats feature down 2 M cents a bushel. The oats selling was largely a re sult ot Inadequate buying power. Corn price declines were large ly a result of sympathy with oats. Rye was adversely affected by downturns of the two chief feed grains, notwithstanding that wea ther conditions were about as bad as possible for corn movement. Provisions 'declined; with pack ing interests' conspicuous as sell ers. - , Prune Stocks Are Fairly Well Down California Growers Held Under 35,000 Tons On January 1 California growers held some thing under 35,000 tons ot dried prunes on January 1, according to Western Canner and Packer, mag azine of ! the canning and fruit industry. I Of the California hold ings, 20,000 tons are In the Santa Clara district. Relative to the dried prune deal the magazine continues: r "This is a good cleanup, in view of the maritime strike, the carryover of 1935 crop, and gen eral market conditions. ? Says Inspector - A list of 37 dairies, all ot which meet the Grade A standards of the Salem milk ordinance, was releas ed this week by John L. Oeren, county food and 'dairy Inspector. The gsadlngs include all dairies distributing milk in Salem for the period between July it, 1930, and January 15, 1937. Salem, one of many cities using a milk ordinance similar to the Standard milk ordinance develop ed by the U. 8. Public health bu reau, allows only Grade A raw and pasteurized milk to be sold In the city. The ordinance provides as well for periodic inspection of all dairies supplying milk In the Sa lem milk shed and examination of milk aamples for bacteria, count, butter fat. specific gravity and de tection of adulterants. . During the past six months sam ples ot - paateurtted milk have shown an average of 7000 bacter ia per. cubic centimeter and' raw milk has averaged 9400 per" c. c. The maximum allowable is an are rage of 30.000 per e. c These ave rages are based on the results of 192 samples of bottled milk. In addition 463 samples were. taken ot milk as received at the plant prior to pasteurization. There are now 28 dairies licensed to deliver milk in Salem, 9 Grade B produ cers supplying milk to' he pas teurizing plants, and Grade A producers , supply milk to the plants for sale raw. Three Degraded ' During the period three produ cers were degraded for failure to meet bacterial requirements. No distributors were degraded, one conviction was obtained for adul terating milk and one for deliv ering milk without license or hav ing been inspected.
