Abundance of Prunes on Market Now And Willamette Valley Housewives t Suggest Many Recipes For Serving 1 '. By JANE STUART : ' SUNNY skies arid no rain this week to crack the luscious ripe prunes Eave flooded the market with an abundance of-them. There-are many good recipes for using fresh prunes, even though dried prunes usually come to mind when discussing this famous Oregon fruit. Prune conserve is so good with holiday dinners as a re lish and makes, a line spread loro sandwiches to go in school lunch boxes. Try one or all of the fol lowing ideas to vary your pres ent prune diet: j - Prune Conserve .8 pints ground prunes 6 pints sugar i 1 large can crushed pineapple, drained 1 lb. walnut meats Boil ground prunes and sugar one hour. Then add ' pineapple and boil another hour. Last add walnuts; boil 15 minutes. Seal in glasses. Makes about 11 pints. 1 1 2 1 Prune Cream Pie cup sugar i , teaspoon cornstarch cup not mux eggs teaspoon vanilla cup chopped walnuts j. cup fresh cooked and pitted prunes teaspoon salt. Mix sugar and cornstarch, add scalded milk gradually. Pour over beaten eggs. Add prune pulp and walnuts. Mix well. ! Pour into . a pan lined with pastry. Sprinkle a little grated nutmeg over top and set into hot oven, reducing heat after 10 minute's. Bake until firm in center, about; SO minutes. Serves six. Cream shortening and su gar thoroughly. Melt - chocolate over hot water and add to cream ed mixture. Mix, add well beaten eggs and mix again. Sift flour with 'I baking powder, soda v and salt and add alternately with milk, a small amount at a time. Add prunes and vanilla and beat thoroughly. Pour into ... three greased layer cake tins and bake 25 to 30 minutes at 375 de grees. Spread top and sides with any white icing or chocolate but ter frosting., Serves .12.
