Descend- ents of the pioneer Wearer family- of this district held a reunion at Paradise Island Sunday, spend ing the day in visiting, sports and swimming. A picnic lunch was also a feature. The coronation ceremonies tor the queen of the Hop Fiesta to be held here August 27 to 30 in- elusive, will take place on the opening evening ot the celebra tion. Mayor Gives Crown Mayor A. L. Thomas of Inde pendence, will crown the Fiesta rnler, and an elaborate ceremon ial, will be presented under the di rection' of Paul Robison, Mrs. El sie Bolt, and Mrs. Maurice J. Butler. Special : lighting equip ment will he instaUed in the Hop Bowl, the Independence munic ipal auditorium, particularly for the coronation. Distinguished citizens of several valley j towns will act as escorts to the members of the Fiesta royal court, which, in addition to the qneeu, will be composed of a crown princess and four princess es. The hop-land royalty will be selected on next Wednesday ev ening, from a group of 13 young ladies who are competing for the honor of ruling over the celebration. Expect Biggest, Best This year's Fiesta is expected to climax all previous festivals held in this' section of the Wil lamette valley. Events scheduled to take place during the four-day show include: a Cinderella pag eant, a rodeo, donkey polo games, midnight frolic revue, dances, a carnival and grand floral and wild west parade. Hop pickers are arriving here in hordes, and it is expected that at least 15.000 of these workers will be in this locality by Fiesta time. Woodburn Will Seek WPA Work WOODBURN. Aug. 20.- T h e regular meeting of the city council-was held Tuesday end the fol lowing business transacted: The street commissioner was authorized . to repair the street where new water mains had re cently been installed; the mayor and recorder were given author ity to make an application for a blanket project for WPA work next winter which will give the city the privilege of handling men on any -city' work where work is needed.' 4 . - Complaint was made by Chas. Saunders and George Stuckey that tennis players at the Library Park square were damaging the roof of their building by climbing to find lost balls and Councilman H. M. Sweet of Salem has been procured for the work.- s Hold Funeral For A. Johnston, 82 JEFFERSON. Aug. 20. Fun eral services for Agnes Johnston, 82, who died -Friday at the home of her. brother, James Johnston, were held Sandar afternoon from the local Christian church. Rev. J. Merlin Hill conducting the ser vice. Mrs. Gilbert Looney and Mrs. Merlin Hill sang several numbers. The pallbearers ; were Wilbur Funk, F. EL Seehale, S. H. Goln, Walter Watkins, Virgil Weddle and Tim Kelly. Mrs. Robert Kelly and Miss Margaret Densmore ar ranged the. flowers. . r- Agnes Johnston, daughter of James and Caroline Johnston was born Nor: 24, 1853, in Woodland, Ontario, Canada. , Her girlhood was spent in Canada until In 1912 when she came to the United States and lived in the vicinity of Chicago until 1J15 when she re turned to Canada.1 In 1919 she came to Oregon with her brother, James Johnston of Jefferson, at whose home she passed away. isariy . in life Miss Johnston Joined the Presbyterian church and was . a member until her death. . ; Surviving are two brothers.
