This simple, wholly delightful tale of childhood and early youth is certain to delight millions, for all of the charm of L. M. Montgom ery's beloved novel has been cap tured in the picture. The characterizations are par ticularly fine. Anne Shirley, Gil bert Blythe, Matthew and Mar iUa Cuthbert, and the other cen tral figures of the Montgomery novel, are depicted with convinc ing reality. The story, as millions of de voted readers will recall, concerns an orphan girl who is sent to a farm home in place of the boy who had been expected. Whimsi cal, Imaginative, sweet, but as fiery-tempered as her red hair de notes, she wins the hearts of the old bachelor and spinster who take her in. Her conquest of Matthew, the brother, is easy, but the bitter Marilla is harder to reach. A schodlroom quarrel launches the romance between Anne and Gilbert Blythe, its development being depicted as they grow old er. True love never did have a smooth course, even in charming Prince Edward Island, the rural background of the story, and an old family quarrel, which has lasted through the years, threat ens their happiness.
