"The County Chairman" Is a
screen adaptation of the famous
play of the same title, by one of
America's foremost humorists,
George Ade. Opening on Broad
way in the year 1902, "The Coun-
Uy Chairman" ran there for a year
with Maclyn Arbuckle as its star
and then toured for the next three
seasons. In addition to the cel
ebrity which it brought to Ar
buckle, the play created another
star of the era Willis P. Sweat
nam, who appeared in the fam
ous role of "Sassafras", colored
man-of-all-work. In the screen
play. Stepln Fetchlt is seen in this
notable part.
"The County Chairman", it is
said, is a story of smiles and heart
tugs, rivalling the hugely success
ful "Judge Priest" and "David
Harum" as a vehicle for Rogers.
In the new film he is seen as a
wily, lovable county boss, half
dipkimat, half-rustic. He wins
elections and arranges lore match
es with equal skill and no one,
not even his rivals, can resist him.

TO GM THEATRE
James Dunn, comedian by na
ture and preference, is one of the
principals in Fox Film's sparkling,
all-star musical picture, "George
White's 1935 Scandals", which la
hailed as the last word in musical
screen entertainment. It comes
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday to
the Grand theatre.
Singers, dancers and entertain
ers, all stage and screen topnotch
ers bestar the new Fox Film su
per - entertainment, "George
White's 1935 Scandals". They In
clude Alice Faye, James Dunn,
Ned Sparks, Lyda Robertl, Cliff
Edwards, Arline Judge, Eleanor
Powell, Emma Dunn, Benny Ru
bin. George White, in addition to
having conceived, produced, and
directed the entire production, ap
pears in the east.
The 1935 Scandals, said to be
more colorful than the first edi
tion, has a stellar cast composed
of stage and screen celebrities.
The entire musical extravagan
za was conceived, produced and
directed by George White.
Among the hit tunes specially
composed for the new "Scandals"
are: "According to the Moon
light". "Hunkadola," "Oh, I Did
n't Know (You'd Get That Way)",
"It's An Old Southern Custom",
"I Got Shoes, You Got Shoesles",
"I Was Born Too Late". They
were created by Jack Yellen, Herb
Magidson, Joseph Meyer and Cliff
Friend.
In "Anne of Green Gables",
which opens today at the State
theatre, a worthy successor to
"Little Women" in charm and
heart appeal, comes to the screen.
This simple, wholly delightful tale
of childhood and early youth is
certain to delight millions, for all
of the charm of L. M. Montgom
ery's beloved novel has been cap
tured in the picture.
The characterizations are par
ticularly fine. Anne Shirley, Gil
bert Blythe, Matthew and Mar
iUa Cuthbert, and the other cen
tral figures of the Montgomery
novel, are depicted with convinc
ing reality.
The story, as millions of de
voted readers will recall, concerns
an orphan girl who is sent to a
farm home in place of the boy
who had been expected. Whimsi
cal, Imaginative, sweet, but as
fiery-tempered as her red hair de
notes, she wins the hearts of the
old bachelor and spinster who
take her in. Her conquest of
Matthew, the brother, is easy, but
the bitter Marilla is harder to
reach.
A schodlroom quarrel launches
the romance between Anne and
Gilbert Blythe, its development
being depicted as they grow old
er. True love never did have a
smooth course, even in charming
Prince Edward Island, the rural
background of the story, and an
old family quarrel, which has
lasted through the years, threat
ens their happiness.
Backgrounds representing the
Canadian province of which the
author wrote so feelingly in her
story are lovely,
