' , - - t J 300 Manchurian Bandits Killed, Japanese Claim TOKYO. Friday, Oct.' IS. (AP) The Osaka newspaper Asahl said today 300 Manchurian bandits were slain and sixteen Japanese soldiers killed or woun ded in the sharpest battle in months in Manchuria, which be gan four days ago near ChlnshL Reports said a Japanese de tachment elashed with 1000 ban dits. Lieutenant Ito, leader of the hard-pressed Japanese forces, was reported killed. Reinforcements, including an airplane from Chinchow, arrived two days after the battle began and turned the tide against the outlaws. Five Survivors Of Sea Tragedy Arrive at Port PHILADELPHIA. Oct. 12. (AP) Lone survivors of a grim tragedy of the sea, five Greek sailors, reached port today aboard a rescue vessel, telling of a ter rific hurricane which sent their ship, the freighter Annoula, and 2 of their mates to the ocean's bottom. They were picked up Sunday night by the Italian steamship Monteno, In a thrilling rescue, after spending 35 hours In a small open boat, battered by raging At Untie seas and drifting they knew not where. Malzels, '22, clerk in the : department, who admitted taking 12052 within the last 16 months. Sentence of Malzels, who plead ed guilty before Judge L. H. Mc Mahan on Wednesday, will be held up until the audit is com pleted. Friends, of Malzels have raised the amount, of money he allegedly took, to repay the state. Malzels Is tree under an order requiring him to report; daily to District Attorney Trindle. ; It was learned yesterday his wife, whom he married September 10 at an .elaborate wedding id Portland, has given up her rings given by him then, to help repay the embeszled moneys.
