The Salem Senators are in need of more competition to keep them In proper trim for the Sunday games of the State league, and Manager Frank Bashor is trying to line up some midweek games, preferably twilight contests on Wednesday (of each week. NE of the most thrilling lightweight championship battles in years is expected to take place when champion Tony Canzoneri defends his crown against the sensational Chicagoan, Barney Ross. On paper this scrap figures to be a wow, and I don't see how it can miss being a really great fight. Can zoneri always fiehts. He is a lion- hearted, two-fisted belter, who has never been known to back away from an exchange of blows. Barney Ross is an aegressive whirlwind type of fighter, and he and Tony should furnish lots of fireworks when they clash. If this fight had been held four "or five months ago. the chances are that Canzoneri would have been an overwhelming favorite to whip the soeed? Chicago kid. But several things which have occurred since that time are causing many smart fight critics to lean to Ross in the coming battle. Canzoneri was decisively beaten by Wesley Ramey in an overweight bout a couple of months ago, and he looked none too hot in turning back Battling Shaw at New Orleans recently. However, the wise boys are not taking too much stock in Tony's dis appointing showings in these non- title things. What makes them doubtful about the champion's chances with Ross is that CJanzon eri's battle-scared face is cutting more easily than ever. In both the Shaw and Ramey fights Canzoneri suffered bad cuts over the eyes which handicapped him severely. Mow it would seem that a sharp shooter like Barney Ross would be a dead cinch to open the old wounds over the champion's puffed optics inside of a few rounds. Of course it is highly questionable whether a half-blinded Canzoneri would be able to turn back the champion ship bid of the speedy and deter mined Chicago Bash. Ross is a tall, thin kid who spe cializes in left hooks and jabs. He boxes somewhat on the style of his former stable-mate. Earl Mastro. who was the best featherweight in the world until his eyes went bad and forced him to retire. Some critics intimate that the frail Chicago kid is weak around the midsection, and the burly bull like Canzoneri is expected to ham mer away savagely at Barney s stomach. In spite of the fact that Pete Reilly and a lot of other guys who know their fistic onions are plane ing heavily on Ross to win, I rather like Canzoneri's chances. Remem ber, Tony is the greatest "money" fighter we've had around in years and years. Copyright. 1ISS. King ration SjBiDcita. Im. LOS ANGELES. June 20. (AP) Lou Martin's double along the right field foul line in the nine scored Haney and Durst and gave Hollywood a 7 to 6 vic tory over Los Angeles in the first game of their series. - Trailing 4 to 2 as they came to bat in the eighth, the Stars tied the count on Pinch Hitter Johnny Bassler s double that scored Mar tin and Taitt. Summers ran for Bassler and scored on Strange's single, a wild pitch by Archie Campbell and Gazella's terrific smash on which Taitt made a sen sational one-handed catch against the screen, Oglesby scoring. Hughey McMullen smashed a homer over the right field fence in the last of the ninth. Stainback hit a home run in the fifth with one aboard. The Marlon county Americas Legion Junior baseball league schedule will draw to a close to day, with the Salem .Juniors play ing the same team against which they opened the season, Pete De G uire's strong Woodburn outfit which was then, and still Is. the favorite to win the county title. The game will be at Woodburn. Salem's poorest showing of the year was in that first game against Woodburn, and Harold Hauk's boys are determined to make today's contest their best; and if they do, a victory is not be yond the realms of possibility. Francis Gatchell, Salem pitcher, held the Woodburn boys in check for several innings of the first game, and he is in much better condition now. On the other hand the Salem team could do nothing against the lengthy Bevens, Woodburn hurl er. But they may not face him to day, as DeGuire has found anoth er chucker, Hershberger, who held Stayton acceptably a week ago. In either case, the Salem team is not expected to be so muscle- bound as it was in the opener. The boys would rather like to face Bevens again, to see what they could do to him now. HUBBARD DEFEATS ST. PAUL ST. PAUL. June 20 (Special) The Hubbard baseball team went on a 17-hit rampage here Sunday and defeated St. Paul 15 to 9 In a Mid-Willamette league game. His absence was sorely felt In the game at Silverton a week ago. If Salem should upset tne aope and win. It will throw Salem and Woodburn Into a tie. and Sliver- ton will be in the same huddle if it defeats Stayton as Is expected. In that case a playoff series among Salem. Woodburn and Sil verton would be necessary. Cubs ofMehama Beaten by Shaw M EH AM A. June 20 The Me hama "Cabs" lost to Shaw 14 to 3 la the; Shaw field Sunday. As we remarked several days ago, it's tune for the boys ana girls to go In training for the sports program which will be staged by the American Le gion on the morning of July 4 at the fairgrounds. Harry Scott, chairman of the sports committee, has completed the list of events, and we'U men tion few more of them so you will know what to work on. One of the most interesting j races ought to be the 25-yard brig.net race, for boys under 16. It sounds like a stunt for the loser of an election bet, but any way, the trick is to roll a stand ard briquet with your nose, and In order to convince a sufficient number of boys that it's worth while, six cash prizes have been offered. Girls ought to practice run ning and handing gas-filled toy ballons to each other, for there's a relay race In which those things will be substi tuted for baton and the team which doesn't make a perfect "pass" wUl be known instant ly, for ' the balloon will soar aloft that la If the lesion boys find some gaa to fill them with. This race Is for girls 10 to 14 years old, four to a team. There'll be sack races, three-1 I legged races, barrel races, ordi nary footraces for Tarious age groups, bicycle r a e e a that's where Harry gets his advertis ing a xat man's race, and a Shetland pony race. In addition to the novelty races we men- tloned the other day.
